This is something I hadn't really thought about, and the question came to mind while judging a current challenge, so here it is.
Several people arranged or created inanimate objects for the personification challenge. A lot of them didn't meet my standard for personification, some did. I now faced the problem of distinguishing whether I was judging the talents of a photographer or a sculptor.
The personification was created by the skillful arrangement of objects then photographing them, not skilled eye of a photographer discovering personification in the arrangement of existing objects.
What definition should apply in these cases?
To complicate things more, I just thought of a second problem. Under challenge rules (not going to cite chapter/verse) photos are not to exclusively present a work of existing art. Arranging objects to express a specific idea or evoke a particular feeling constitutes the creation of a work of art. Drawing a smiley face in the sand is art.
Building a snowman or stacking rocks is art.
Should all these entries be DQ'ed?

You have to ask, does the picture evoke a human feeling? Does the inanimate object posses human qualities? Your opinion will differ than everyone else. Also, setting up objects in order to compose a picture is part of photography. A portrait photographer arranges his model and the backdrop, doesn't he?
So really all we can do is vote on how we feel about the picture. Do we see the personification or not. There are quite a few good shots, some with human looks and some without. So no DQ's for me.
