I was wondering what people's experience (if any) with "imported" equipment bought from B&H Video. I'm thinking about the Canon 24-105 in the intermediate future (months) and see a $100 price difference.
Opinions? |

I purchased a import canon 70-200mm f/4 L lens from b&H and it is the exact same lens as the USA Warranty version. However there are a couple of things that change when you buy and import. 1)You will receive a 1 year warranty from B&H and have to ship to New York for repair instead of canon. 2)When you go to sell the lens it tends to sell for less because it's an import.
I purchased mine for $569 +/- from b&H and sold it on ebay for $520 +/-. And from what I understand b&h has a canon certified warranty department.(no sure on that, but I believe so.)

I think of it as buying something if I'm abroad. I was in Tokyo early this year and bought some lenses. I guess it's regarded as an import. No problems whatsoever. It's all about warranty. |

AFAIK, Canon honors lens warranties no matter where they are purchased. Camera odies are a different deal. This makes the "import vs. USA version" essentially meaningless for lenses. I have not had to test this, but have never heard anyone have a problem with warranty repair on a lens.

How much do you think I can get for a 3-month old 17-40L lens? It's the USA version, BTW.

I'm sure you could get at least $250-300 for it! (and if that's enough $ to satisfy you then drop me an email ASAP!!)

After one year, there is no warranty whether your lens is an import or not. I'm not sure how this would decrease resale value if you decided to sell the lens after one year. BTW, I don't even think the warranty is transferable in the first year anyway.

Not sure on Canon but I know on Tamron lenses the US warranty is 7 years. On Nikon it is 5 years. Both only come with a one year warrantee from B&H if you buy them as an import.
Cheap insurance in my book.
edit: looks like Tamron is a 6 year now not a 7
