I had to clone out some distracting stuff in the background of this, and it looks good on my monitor. Can anyone else see any "shadowing" in the background, or does it look pure black to you also?

I had to take my contrast and brightness all the way up to see where you cloned out. So looks good at regular levels.

Good job

Looks pure black to me too. Sometimes I use the invert command if i'm trying to make a pure black background, it's easier to see tiny spots if it's white then just invert it back.

cool, glad to hear it looks good.

how do you use the invert tool?

In Photoshop CS you hit the CTRL and I, it will actually invert the colors. When you're done, hit the CTRL and I again and you'll be back with your original colors. Works great!
