I just downloaded and installed the DPP updater and it installed along with it a piece of software (the name escapes me at the moment, as I'm sitting at my work computer, not my home one) that copies images from a card to the computer when connected. Previously, Image Capture used to pop up when I connected the card reader, now the Canon software runs. So far, so boring, but I've noticed that the CR2 files, once transferred have a preview icon, rather than a blank document icon. This is on a Mac.

My actual question is this: does this count as modifying the RAW file? The (picture) contents of the RAW file are not changed, but I assume that the icon is put in a 'sidecar' file. Would continued use of this technique leave me open to disqualification from the rash of ribbons I'm undoubtedly going to win?

Thanks.
