wow... I have never seen so many badly executed photos... I mean if you take a picture at 640*480 and crop it to 300*100 and then blow it up again, its not going to look good! Also I don't think I have seen as many "thoughtless" or non creative photos in a challenge either... I mean a picture of the dpchallenge homepage?? ...strange...

Well I'm happy to say this is the first challenge when I've gotten nothing but fabulous comments... and my image is sitting at 3.9.
How's your picture doing? |

I have to admit that I haven't been blown away by too many submissions this week. I'm only done voting on half of the submissions, so I still have hope. Mine is sitting at 5.85, a bit better than anticipated. I have to admit that my photo was pretty boring. I knew that from the get go. Can't wait to see next week's submissions.

You have the ability to critique the photos with both your score and comments. I don't think it's really necessary to single them out in the forums. This WAS a tough challenge and obviously many people couldn't come up with an idea at all. There are always bad ideas and badly executed photos. Keep in mind that we're all at different levels and working with different limitations. |

I'm just about tied with you Jacko, at 5.852 I think. :) I'm really interested now in seeing your pic and how it turns out after voting is finished. I have 17 comments also, mostly good. What's really funny is viewing the voting results for particular pictures and you always get that "fringe" that votes 10 for the worst pics and 0 and 1 for the best pictures!
Gotta love it.

Don't ya just wonder what the hell they are thinking?
Makes ya just want to knock on their head like your knocking on a door and say, "hello, anyone home?". kinda like when ya get a comment that leaves ya scratching your head... in a way though it adds to the fun.. at least for me... I just laugh about it... better to laugh about it than get frustrated... |

I think it's forums like this one that make people decide not to comment at all.

I't forums like this that make me not submit a picture. I'm an amaeture and looking for constructive criticism not nasty shot below the belt. When I score I try to do so as closely to the tech as I have learned the correct thing to do. I just can't always do it with my photos. I enjoy giving my comments so they will understand where my score, high or low, came from. I usually sign them. If I don't want to hurt their feeling because it is really a low score I'll rate it only with no comment. Anything I could say would only make them feel bad and I don't want to do that. If you don't like my comments you can always e-mail me and I'll go back in before Sunday and delete my comment and only leave my score. I want to keep enjoying this web-site and don't want to prevent anyone else from enjoying it. If my comments upset you, just let me know and I'll get rid of them. Thanks for letting me get that off my mind.
And I do take the time to vote on all of them. I usually go back through a couple of times to see if I misjudged any and they should have higher votes. Maybe I was having a bad day. Want to make sure it was the photo and not my day that gave them their score. PTL

Thanks, I needed that. I've read some pretty harsh comments about the comments and was about to stop commenting and just score. But then you heard bad remarks about that too. IF you take the time to set them up, take them, work on the, and submit them you deserve a comment on it. After I finish I go back and usually up some of the scores and let them know I did. We all need a pat on the back once in a while and thanks for you pat on my back. I really needed it. Thanks. |

How about those comments that say you have a good subject, meets the challenge, good focus, good composition, good crop ... but it's only a 5. We've been joking about these comments for a while, and I just got one. I know that a lot of a score is based on just how much you like a photo, but if you can't tell that anything is wrong with it or why you don't like it... I'm a little baffled. |

ummm, you know, i really don't think the last part of your post needed to be included, but that is just my opinion. As someone else has said, this contest attracts all levels. Singling one picture out of 170+ is not necessary. If you really do not like a picture, give it a low score and move on. It was a difficult challenge for many, and going on in the forums about how bad stuff is compounds the problem. They stop submitting because they don't feel they can improve, then they can't improve because they haven't submitted to get the feedback.

PTL, I just checked my comments and had about the same reaction -- your comment was specific, constructive, and complimentary as well. Thanks! |

They told you what they liked and that got you the 5. Mayb if you email them NICELY and asked why only a 5 with all the good comments they might tell you privately what they didn't like about it. Maybe privately so as not to embarase you or make you look bad infront of all the others. They might have consideration for your feelings. Just a thought.

Thanks for taking the time to tell me and to do it openly. I really needed that and appreciate it. With all the comments about comments it can really discourage a person, especially if they are trying to be as fair as they know how and score all of them. I appreciate your time and your comment.
