Thanks to those who voted and commented on my "my corner" astronomy shot:

I know that pure astronomy shots usually do not do that well in challenges and this reaffirms that belief. For those that wanted to know, it was shot with my 10D and 70-200 f/4 mounted piggyback on a very well aligned and firm telescope mount. This was a single 4 minute exposure, cropped slightly.

I took four shots that night under the same conditions/parameters and combined them into a single composite image that can be seen here.

Would the composite image have broken the editing rules?

Most definitely. I believe both sets of rules start with "your entry must be from a single photo..." or language to that effect.

Yep, unfortunately composite astro photos do violate the rules, something which is quite unfortunate, as it eliminates potential for some beautiful submissions. Allowing composites would, however, be a logistics nightmare since we'd have to accept multiple originals for verification. BTW, It's even illegal to subtract a dark frame if not done in-camera.
On the upside, as the digital camera market matures, the megapixel race will cool off and other attributes, e.g. noise, will become foci for improvement. We're already seeing some of this in the DSLR market. The advent of lower noise at high ISO will make it easier to take stunning astro images that are DPC legal. I'd bet you'll see a few more in the coming year ;-)
