A while back there was a Katrina relief fund for DPC Prints. Fortunately the death toll there was minimal compared to estimates, but there's just been another major disaster in Pakistan with a potential death toll of over 40,000.

I was wondering if there will be more relief prints offered for this too - but perhaps we should just leave the meter running and direct all proceeds to the relevant disaster of the moment?

It's not just these high-visibilty disasters either, but ongoing crises like the Sudan and other famines that we could be supporting too. I'd be happy to donate all my prints for such causes. Plus, direct cash donation links may not be a bad idea either, since DPC is always so pround of its community spiritâ€Â¦

I'd be happy to donate sales of mine towards funds for Pakistan earthquake victims.

It would be nice to know how much we raised for Katrina... that kind of seemed to go all quiet unless I missed a thread announcing results? I know that I pulled in about $80 of sales for it but I heard we only raised about a $1000. Whilst that's still a thousand more than $0 it surprised me that we didn't raise more. I really thought with the number of people donating their prints that we'd raise more but I don't know if those people who ticked the box to donate also posted or emailed the link out anywhere?

If D&L do agree to a similar project for this disaster and people sign up, perhaps it's worth pointing out (though I'm sure I'll get flamed for doing so) that signing one's prints up is one thing but not really a very useful thing if there aren't any actual sales.

I'd like to actually raise some money to support the charities rather than just go around saying I donated my print sales to make me feel better about myself. I'm not saying that people did that but I do think there was an element of signing up without really committing to the project.

i'm running my Katrina print sales through the end of October but after that, i'm more than willing to offer my print sale profits for donation. i only sold one print through dpcprints, though. i've sold 5 prints through other outlets and i'll be donating that money at the end of Oct.

Rather than jumping at each disaster as they happen much like swatting at flies, why not develop a plan whereby a little bit from each sale goes to the Red Cross to be used where it is most needed.

THanks, I'm usually fairly observant, honest!
And no, I didn't get the email report mentioned...

Thanks - didn't see that one - but more importantly is there any action being taken?

Like the Katrina prints gesture this may not earn thousands but...

Jon

I was not suggesting we do nothing, not at all, but pointing out that, to my mind, there seemed to be a lot of people that ticked the little box and felt all warm and fuzzy about it but didn't really DO anything at all to make that tick mean something by trying to generate visitors TO the prints site.

I don't think it's going to be easy to do this without assistance from Drew and Langdon as getting the money out individually and then sending it on will tend to result in lots getting lost in bank fees and the like. I have written to ask them if they would consider setting this up as they did for Katrina but it does involve some work for them, both in setting it up and in manually collating the money, afterwards.

As I stated earlier, as much as we all want to help I think setting something up that would allow donation of a portion of print profits to be donated on an ongoing basis could prove to be more beneficial (and less time consuming) than trying to address each disaster individually.

Just a thought.

Yes, I think this is a good idea, if people are willing.
I'd do this if the organisation chosen were something such as International Red Cross or Medecins Sans Frontieres.

Does anybody know of any charity rating services (like Charity Navigator) that includes non-US based charities? I like to see how my donations are being spent... on actual relief, or lining the pockets of the charity's executives.
