if the pics are very important, shut the computer down now and take it to a pro. the more you do the less chance of recovery

If the pics are in the recycle bin, can't Travis99 get them back?
Something like open the recycle bin and "restore" files?
If his recycle bin is set to delete on shutdown, he'd loose them for sure!
My recycle bin doesn't dump until I tell it to... |

There are a number of file recovery methods that will get them back, but I would also recomend getting the machine to a pro if the shots are important. |

Really, more specifics, are they currently sitting in the recycle bin or did you are already empty the recycle bin? If you already emptied the recycle bin, do as mavrik says and shut down the computer, take it to a professional and there is a good chance they can be recovered, it always amazes me what's still on your computer until you do a complete cleaning and defrag.

Good luck! |

If they are in the recycle bin it's easy. Just open the recycle bin, select all the files and say restore.
If you dumped the recycle bin, and you don't already have a utility installed like Norton undelete, and if they are critical, you are indeed better off taking the advice below about going to a pro.
If your files were on the same drive you boot from, and your swap disc, anything you do can start to replace the sectors being used by those delete files. That's why people are telling you to shut down and don't use your computer.
If you can't afford a pro, and you have another computer, you could buy/download an undelete utility that doesn't need installation. You would download it on another computer and then simply bring it to the main computer on floppy or CD. Then of course, you would need to use it to recover the files.

ive had good success with getdataback from www.runtime.org, you put your hard drive in another working computer run the program and it will find most lost data, the only catch is its about $40US (off memory).
Whatever you do dont start adding new files, programs etc as nshapiro said "anything you do can start to replace the sectors being used by those delete files"

PCTOOLs has worked for me before...
The files are all there, their names have just been removed from the Table of contents of the hard disk (simple terms).
The problem is that anything you add to your computer now could overwrite any part of those deleted files. So want to be quick about it in anything you do. Even a shut down could write a restore point back to your hard disk and 400 is a lot of pics.
If you have any automatic defragging (norton makes one, diskeeper etc) software running turn it off.
I'm looking for a floppy based (or USB drive) restore program right now. |

I am sure there is a way you can do this through windows. We have XP and my husband recovered some files he had deleted in error. He is in hospital at the moment, will speak to him this evening and ask him.

Do not fear, it's a piece of cake.
1-Open your recycle bin
2-The pics will still be there unless you emptied it out.
3-Highlight the ones you deleted by mistake (even if it's only a folder you deleted, it will be there)
4-Click 'Restore this/all items'. Make sure that's what you click.
5-Done. Photos will be right where you had them before.
6-Be more careful next time ;)j/k
LMK if all is OK.
