When I was at a soccer game the other day, I saw an excellent photo opportunity, but didn’t take because I am not sure how it would look. Perhaps I should explain the situation a little better. The two teams were standing in the middle of the field while the national anthem was playing, and saw a great shot of three team members next to each other with their hands over their hearts and singing. I wanted to take that shot, but I wasn’t sure on what I should do as a photographer. What should I do? Is it disrespectful of me to continue taking pictures? What would you do, or what have you done in this situation?

These shots are taken all the time -- you don't think they turn off the TV cameras do you?
One of the reasons I got a camera with a flip-out/tiltable LCD is that it's possible to hold the camera unobtrusively as waist-height and still frame the shot, kind of like using an old twin-lens reflex. |

PROFESSIONAL photographers shoot during the national anthem all the time. Especially the TV cameramen... But I've seen some memorable national anthem shots from a low angle with a WA lens, meaning the photographer was right down at the players' feet, LOL.
Is it good etiquette to do it as a spectator? Hell, I donno. I suppose it's not, but the question really is "Do you care?" If it bothers you what others might think of you in a situation like that, then you're probably better off not doing it...

I think as long as you are respectful to the anthem and the people it is being played for then yes it is ok. I shoot different events for the military and have shot during envocation and benediction (spelling?) (the opening and closing prayers) especially if I know the member is a religious person and that image may mean more to them. I always try to make sure I am respectful with the flash and still pray with them as I shoot.

I think that running naked across the field during the anthem is disrespectful, but other than that I do not see any problem with taking photographs, talking, doing whatever you want. It is just a bit of music, sometimes there is a bit too much respect imho.
But hey I am European/Dutch and the majority here has no feeling at all with national anthems and do not even know the lines. When I see the Americans and their respect for their anthems and flags it looks way overdone to me, no disrespect. :)
Just a cultural difference I guess.
