Just looking at some of the archives going back to the very first one. I can't believe that the scores today are so low compared to the beginning of the DP site. Many of the beginning winners were getting over 8 as a final score, and the images seem really poor compared to now. What gives? Many of even the 4's coming out in todays challenges are better than the 8's from before.
I think that we are not giving scores that really reflect the true quality of the images being sent in today. I don't know what people are voting on, or what standards they have, but I really think that there ends up being a lot of sad people today when they see their scores coming in. They feel that the image should be higher in scoring, and I agree. The quality of even some of the point and shoots are so much better now, so why don't the scores show that change?
Any comments? Every person voting should read this and review what they are scoring on, and maybe they might see that they really aren't giving scores to reflect the image. I do say, however, that many of the images in the challenges of today don't really follow the rules, and those images do well anyway. Then an image that really supports the challenge and reflects the theme does really bad if even one thing is wrong with it. Come on people, give the rules of the challenge more weight. If you have a totally clear beautiful picture of a bridge but the challenge is beverage, don't give out a 9. Focus is important, but the theme of the challenge should carry more weight than even focus. That is my rant for today.

I think that it is actually the other way around. Back in those days people were giving scores that were way too high.

I agree...I think people might get discouraged when they should be encouraged. Some photos that avg. in the 4-5 range should be higher than they are. The results might lead to someone giving up photography because they might think they dont excel at it.

The scores are relative to what's entered...a 5 these days is pretty good when you consider that the ribboners might not even make 7. The percentile is more telling than the absolute score.

Just another point. In particular, the beverage challenge. There should be some thought given to voting really high on a picture of just a can. I had taken several pictures of cans of soda, but decided that was not really much of anything when it comes to using photo skills. People really vote way to high on pictures that are nothing but a macro snapshot. There is something called lighting to enhance a beverage to its fullest potential. Sorry, but I think that most of the cans of soda were front lit, with a neutral background, and thrown under some water to give them droplets, then the picture was taken. I could not bring myself to enter such an image. I think it shows nothing of the skill of the person taking a picture. It just shows they have a great macro function.

The average vote of the first 5 challenges was like 5.5 and the average vote of the most recent 5 challenges is like 5.2. I wouldn't exactly call .3 a huge difference, especially when in the first 5 challenges there were 30,050 votes cast TOTAL and the most recent challenge produced 74,794 ALONE.
Also, if you feel a photo is not following the rules, you need to request DQ for it so we can review the original and exif. Remembering however, that the challenge dsuggestion is NOT a rule, and that it is VERY subjective. Referring way back to the pencil challenge, a photo of a horse penis. Didn't seem to fit the challenge to me (or a lot of other people) however, if I remember right, in the discussion of the photo, seems that it technically DID fit the description by some obscure reasoning.
Another example, if the challenge were 'chips' and someone submitted a photo of french fries, most people would think that it didn't fit the challenge. but somewhere (can't remember where) that's what they call what most people think of a fries. They call them chips. So what may not 'obviously' fit the challenge to YOU, may be the most obvious subject for the challenge to someone else.
