Five days a ago I didn't have a clue about web site design or how they actually worked for that matter, but I thought I would have ago and try and get some web presence and in my typical fashion I just self taught and got in and had a go.

I know what I have done is not very profesional at all but it has got me started and I think I have caught the bug now and want to improve and create more.

So anyone out there who would like to give me a few tips on what I have done so far well this is the site. It isn't designed for sales just to get my name out and build on it from a small start.

Some of the areas I see as problems are the slowness for dail up, no real substance to keep viewers interested and I had all sorts of problems with page sizes as you will see. It was built with frontpage but with the hosting agreement comes mambo and a few other programs that I'm starting to play with that look interesting if anyone can give me ideas on what other web tools I should look at would be much appreciated.

G'day. Spotted the .com.au and guess you are from down under. I used to live in Sydney.

OK. A few things:

IMO, you need to think more about the layout of the index page. It is what the viewer sees first, and they should be impressed. For me, on your page, the first thing that hit me was that you picture (linking to the Gallery) is not in the centre. It just made the page look odd as there is a big space in the middle.

Secondly, the gallery page is done with Gallery v1 right? Well, they've launched v2 now with lots of customisation opportunities that you can benefit from, in particular the fact that if you visit the Gallery, there is no link back to the index page. You have to use the Back button. Not ideal. Also, the counter doesn't seem to be working on this page.

You need to change the New Page 1 section of your HTML. Give your page a good heading. For one, it makes it easier for Google to give a description when it finds you page, and two, if you look at the Windows IE bar, it says New Page 1. Not good if you are going for promotion.

I'd put on the first page a bit more about what visitors can expect to get from the site. Why should they become a member?

I'm against a page for "Links" but that is my opinion. I think that once someone has come to your page, you should do your best to keep them there, not give them opportunities to leave.

Your host will have a counter script. Try using this instead as it avoids you having to have the distrcting "Web counter" link.

Just from a design perspective...."What's new" should really be integrated into the index page somewhere, rather than having it's own section, unless you intend to keep it as a long blog.

I see what you mean about the page size. Your trouble is with the background. Perhaps choose centered instead of tiled, or get your self into an image editor and make the image screen size so that you only see it once (not ideal, but quick and easy, as people have different screen sizes).

Otherwise, good to see you taking the plunge and experimenting with web design. There is an enormous amount of possibility out there, and, as they say, "A website takes a day to build...and a lifetime to refine."

Editted for a huge number of typos!

I'd dump the google and firefox link. They're ugly and there's no need for you to advertise for them...

Also, the slow fade between pages is a little gimmicky and makes things too slow.

BTW Great shot of Magnetic Isl. in your gallery!

hey,
no expert myself, but just a couple things i thought of when i saw your site...

for your index page, i think a little bit of CSS will help out a bit, especially with your background image.

the follownig script goes inbetween the portion of your website.

this script will hold your flower down to the exact bottom right cornor of a viewers screen.

if ur concerned about bandwidth, using the script above, have the image cut to the very edge, and in the body tag, replace "background=background%202.jpg" with "bgcolor=black"

...i would also remove the links at the bottom of the page to google and such, unless ur getting reimbursed to keep 'em
