I now do - and I'm well impressed and could never go back to a guzzler.
I've averaged 51mpg around town over two weeks and I'm thoroughly enjoying a state of serene pride at releaving our planet of the few extra tonnes of CO2 my dear old Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo used to pump out. As a designer I naturally love performance cars for looks and speed but I value the long term future of my environment more, despite the higher inital cost of the vehicle.
Quite honestly, I think all cars should be adopting this, or even better technologies, mandatorily. I'm not sure if there's a valid excuse anymore for manufacturers not to move on (necessary utilty/farm/emergency vehicles excluded perhaps).
It feels like driving in a car of the future with its silent running and zero emmissions in electric mode - and it's fairly pokey too if you need it when the electric motor assists the petrol (and that from someone who's used to a turbo 0-60 in 5+ secs).

I've seen a fair few around here lately (edinburgh). They sure do take a while setting off from traffic lights though... but i suppose that might just be the drivers.

| I own a blue one. Ordered it when gas first went over $2.00. Love it! I have only averaged about 44 in town because there are a lot of hills and it was summer so I had to use the AC all the time. It is definitely an attention getter, especially when people see it moving but don't hear anything. |

Yup, that's mine.
I bought it in Feb. of 2003 and never looked back. It's got 49,000 miles on it now and has performed well in all sorts of conditions. Toyota has been really good to it and me. Paid not a penny for the first 37,500 miles. Not even for oil changes. They have since covered, under warranty, a new water pump and have on order a new computer for the little beastie. And the last was only because the "old" computer hiccupped at high altitude and cold this last week and gave out false (but scary) readings.
San Francisco doesn't give me a good chance at really top notch fuel savings with all those hills, but nevertheless, both city and country driving this last 800 miles my on-board computer tells me I have averaged 47.6 mpg.
Awww, you can tell, I like my Prius. |

It's the drivers. They can scoot. |

I own one too and love it. I got 51 mpg in the winter and averaging 47.6 mpg in the summer. The summers here in Tucson Az are very hot and the AC runs all the time. When you get close to the first 5k miles a light will come on to service your vehicle. Don't be alarmed. It is built in so you will go get it serviced every 5k miles.
Oh yea, welcome to the Prius club. They are great and everyone that owns one just waves at each other and smile as they go down the road. |

I've had mine since the beginning of the year. It's a 2001 model, so I'm "only" getting about 44.5mpg.
I find it has enough power, and there seems to be a little extra torque at about 45mph when you needed to enter a freeway. |

| one of my girlfriends bought one about a month ago (talk about right time and right place...she walked on the lot and walked off with the exact car color she wanted, with no waiting list!) her new hobby is picking up men who come over to oogle over her prius and engage in some flirtatious car talk. |

the 1999 Trans am I had which got 25 MPG would do better than 12.6 sec in the 1/4 mile. Modified exhause system and a few other modifications and still passed the emissions test with flying colors and was well below the emission rating that the manufacture claimed. It was actually on the level of a VLE vehicle (Very low emission vehicle). Not too shabby for a car that would go 125 MPH +.
Newer cars are not the problem its the older cars (pre 1996) that are in desperate need of a tune up and or needing to be sent to the junk yard.
so dont be fooled by the missinformation the media is putting out.

From A.Word.A.Day, I remembered this about Prius vehicles:
"I bought a Toyota Prius last year and have been so happy with it that four of my friends have also purchased one. Seeing a driveway full of these cars prompted me to propose a plural (Prii) and a group name (battery). So whenever you see more than one of these cars together you are looking at a battery of Prii." - Patrick Leonard@Comcast.net wrote that.
I thought it was the perfect pluralization, so I share it here with you all. (I only get about 28 mpg around town in my 85 alfa romeo spider, so can't qualify to comment otherise in this thread.)

I don't have one, but I've driven many. I'm the finance manager at the loca Toyota dealership. I would have one, but I don't have to buy my own car. Once they come out with a Sienna hybrid, then I'll trade my van in on one.
Anybody ever want help getting one, or getting Toyota's Extended Service Agreements on them, just PM me and let me know. I can always pull a string here or there.

| I think the next car we are going to get will be a Prius. My husband and I have been married for almost 11 years now, and we have always had one car between us. It has been our way of ctting down on fuel consumption. We have always worked within walking distance. When we both worked for the same company we carpooled. Now, I stay at home with our daughter. You have to be flexible, but it is possible. We want to take it a bit further and get a hybrid. |

Prii sounds good to me!
Riot: I think the reason some people are slow at the lights is because it becomes a quest to see how high you can get your mpg average - thus the gradual starts! It's an education watching the consumption meter react so swiftly to some heavy/light footed acceleration.
AzCrazy: I've always driven vehicles with a 'club' mentality like motorbikes and my Fiat Coupe - flashing headlights on passing each other - it's good and makes you realise that others share your values and caring attitude. I love all that and the Prius is very much in that vibe too.
It's fun to drive and I do get a kick out of sweeping past people in EV mode and they wonder what's making it go so fast without sound. Pleased to see so many people here with some foresight.

Didn't think to find such a discussion here but way to go all you Prius owners. My husband and I have been thinking about it too but just waiting for the price to come down more.
We've had only our Peugeot 206 and even that, it was the first model equipped with the latest HDI engine that was a breakthru for lower and wholly cleaner diesel consumption.
Definitely for anything that will create a more sustainable living and environment! Anybody ever want help getting one, or getting Toyota's Extended Service Agreements on them, just PM me and let me know. I can always pull a string here or there I don't suppose your strings extend right across the atlantic to France, do they ;) |

| For all of us on the Euro zone, what would really be a killer advancement would be to couple the Prius' electro drive system with a diesel engine. Toyota has a very nice 1.4L diesel unit, pumps out 90 bhp and runs on the scent of the thing... now THAT would really make them attractive... Diesel technology has improved by leaps and bounds and a diesel engine has a better efficiency ratio than a petrol one. |
