Today I was taking pictures inside the National Cathedral in Washington DC. I figured a dark place like that would benefit from my flash, so I started taking flash pictures. Then I forgot to open the flash and I realized the background of the pics taken with flash was dark while the pictures taken without flash we evenly exposed AND in focus. I was using my Dimage 7i. Has this ever happened to anyone here and why is this?

That will happen with almost any flash, especially small ones. It's called "flash fall-off," and your flash pictures look unevenly lit because they are unevenly lit. I take it the National Cathedral is huge, so it's not surprising distant backgrounds aren't lit.
