Well I am very excited. I am going to look at the Sigma 300-800mm lens. I have talked with Sigma and they have agreed to send one to Norman Camera in Kalamazoo, MI. It is a lot more than the 50-500 but I am not really that happy with the 50-500 so they are willing to work it out on a new lens. $1000 ---> $5500 so why wouldn't they be. I'll post more info later.

i'm sure it's an awesome lens. 800mm 5.6 is very cool! The thing is really super heavy though, 13 pounds is it?

On your Rebel that will "act" like a 480 - 1280mm Æ’/5.6 lens... awesome.

Better bring the credit card. I have a feeling after you get a chance to play with that bad boy you won't be able to say no...

They wouldn't ship it to Adray's in Ann Arbor? Bummer. I would've met you there to check it out. =]

I saw that lens when in Montreal, at one of the camera stores. It is a beast, mind you a sexy beast.

Is there any thoughts out there on Heavy lens support. I have a nice rigid Manfrotto Tripod with a older ball head that 'sticks'. I want to replace it with a Gimbal style head and use that tripod exclusively for the long lens setup. Any thoughts or advice. I have seen the Manfrotto one but nothing else. Maybe they will have one at Norman Camera. I read Moose Peterson's book wildlife photography and he mentioned three- the Wimberly, Manfrotto and another that I can't seem to remeber or find online. Anyone? Even if I keep the 50-500mm I need something different for support.

I'd recommend the Wimberley Head and a Tripod rated for around twice the weight of the whole Camera/Lens/Head assembly.
