Yeah, another stupid newbie asking for a definiton. ;)

I recently have seen a lot of people claiming that most DPC pictures are stock type photography. I'm a little unclear at exactly what this means.

I understand Stock photography to be clear representations of an object with little or no distractions such that can be used basically as glorified clip-art.

I have a lot of trouble viewing most of the pics in that light. Particularly a lot of the winners we have been having lately.

Could someone please contribute their idea of what Stock Photography actually means and most importantly how this differs from DPC type pics.

If Stock photography doesn't mean what I think it means, then pretty much any good photograph is fair game if a theme could be pulled from it and there is a clearly laid out main subject. This is also something of a definition of a good place to start when preparing a photograph in general terms. Hence, if Stock refers to something broader than my uneducated idea indicates, then it pretty much means any photograph taken with skill and purpose.

Pretty much any photograph can be used as stock unless it's it's way on the fine art side. Even then , I can think of applications

Stock photography can be of anything. It's just a photo that's taken with the speculation that someone will buy it instead of an assignment.

So it's pretty much a meaningless definition then. Stock photography is taking pictures that are good enough to sell with the topic being basically anything.

Therefore, DPC Challenge entries mostly having a "stock" look means that most of the pictures look like they are good enough to sell instead of being family snapshots.

Hmm. sounds like a pretty crummy way of making a negatory statement towards DPC pics.

Thanks
