I read this as I listen to Green Day
"and sing along to the age of paranoia
don't want to be an American idiot
one nation controlled by media
information age of hysteria
calling out to idiot America"
some how it all makes a lot more sense. |
Greenday won alot of awards for that song and record, "American Idiot". |

Please tell me this is a joke or just a way to stir up arguments!!
:( |
Not a Joke, I'm completely serious. We have been putting up with their antics since the early 70's. Enough is enough. |
Hurrrah! More concentration camps. Can we shave their heads and put numbers on them to?
or
were you thinking more like the Japanese internment camps?

Not clear to me that Europe was ever about religion.
But then again, not clear to me that anyone knows what the heck Europe is about any more except for over-regulation in order to kill any form of economic progress.
Oh - I forgot - it's also about spending taxpayers money to shore up unproductive agriculture. Silly me - how could I forget such wonderfully 21st century aims.

Expanding on the topic - do you think the U.S. would qualify, if it applied for EU membership?
(completely hypothetically speaking, of course, just for the sake of this discussion) |

That is probably the most racist thing I have ever heard. I'm very sorry you feel this way. Maybe you should try expanding your knowledge of the Islamic world and see if you current values hold. Just a suggestion.

And the other EU countries do?

Why does Turkey want to join the EU anyway..It's not really going anywhere..It's just a mixture of too many countries making a hosh of things and not agreeing to, well, everything...

I must admit to being a little shocked at the lack of knowledge evident from this thread about what the EU is, what it does, what Turkey is, and how and why Turkey might be admitted.
My own view is that the EU has been a major force for development in its near neighbours. The EU has been responsible for a revolutionary approach towards the politics of international relations and trade within the European Economic Area. While there may be a debate about its precise purpose (a federal Europe v a super national organisation), there is no doubting that it has secured the longest period of peace in Northern Europe since the Pax Romana, and with that a period of sustained growth.
The policy of expansion has been the engine of change in Eastern Europe, creating more wealthy neighbours with whom we can more easily do business. It is responsible for the spread of progressive concepts such as human rights, equality, and social and environmental responsibility. It has achieved this notwithstanding significant social, cultural and language barriers.
I admit that it is bureaucratic, inefficient and cumbersome. However, people forget very easily what life was like without it.
Turkey is the most westernised of the near middle eastern states. It is a secular state, if predominantly Muslim. Its size, geographic spread and unequal distribution of wealth introduce great challenges to its quest to qualify for EU membership. However, the important point to note is that this quest is driving the development of progressive policies and cultural change within the state. The failures of human rights in respect of Kurds and (longer ago) Armenians, and equality principles, are reasons why we should help Turkey implement and enforce human rights policies, not reasons to reject the country.
I can think of no better way to hold up to the rest of the world the potential benefits of the progressive policies of the west, and show how they may be implemented within any society while respecting historical cultural differences, than to help Turkey meet the minimum criteria and support its entry into the EU.

I'm pessimistic today, so here I go:
Coming to the planet near you in 2007...
US has elections in Nov 2006, so nothing happens before that. Presidential elections are in 2008, so nothing happens around that time either. The only good time for something high-risk to happen is then 2007.
Iraq will have to be resolved around that time (not the crisis, but the US involvement). The solution, very bad one indeed but the easiest to implement, is to split the country in 3 pieces. Easier to manage than a civil war in one country.
So, what does this have to do with Turkey and EU? Well, one of the three pieces of Iraq will be Kurdish part. It may merge with Kurdistan and that would increase the activities of the secession movement of Kurds in Turkey. Now, Turkey is a sovereign nation, and it remains to be seen how would they react to attempts to have one part of their territory secede and join another sovereignty.
That won't help their ambition to join the EU.
Maybe I'm full of sh*t today, but that's how I feel. Rant on... |
