Gee I didn't realise the photo had to be the same orientation and dimensions, probably so they look good on a tv screen. Must of missed that part. I guess it would have made judging a little easier though.

Now I am confused, are the pics for a different today show?

Well there not mine. Does anyone on here own them?
10/10/2005 07:25:11 PM · #35
I can only see thumbnail size pics, hard to judge them!!!!

Damn!! I am always finding out about comps after they have finished...... :(

Just had a look at the 5 finalist. To me they were a little disapointing seems like the judges were looking for snapshots.
But what I find strange is now it is a popular vote for first prize by phone. Whoever makes the most calls wins??

Edit : forgot the link (maybe snapshot was a bit harsh)

I didn't enter because I was at work the day I saw it...

It's a bit hard to judge the quality of those shots given the thumbnails aren't clickable, to be honest they don't look too spectacular. (I daresay part of that could be the small size).
10/11/2005 07:28:22 AM · #39
My first reaction looking at the thumbnails was that they were not that spectacular but I suppose with a full view they would have more impact.
I'm more concerned that they have now turned into whoever can get the most SMS or phone votes wins!!
If one of the finalist wanted to they could spend a few thousand dollars in calls for a good chance to win or the person with the biggest network of friends will win it's like they have turned into a TV reality show but I suppose you should expect that from a TV network.
Another interesting concept is that they could pick five finalist in 24 hours from 50000 entries sounds a little random to me.

Ditto with the dissapointing part, of course the final vote is by SMS, they love making money. Unfortunately I think the baby photo will win (no offence to anyone) but in my opinion "the public" are voting according to how cute it is rather than any artistic or technical merit.

keegbow: the judges were voting everyday, not just in the last 24hours as far as i know.

I was thinking that too about finding 5 enteries in such a small time frame too. The contest only ended at 4pm so how is it possible to do it that fast?

I mean I am sure one could look at that many images if they spent only a second on each, but to narrow it down to five seems like an extremely tough call. Although I am sure there would be a hell of a lot of photos that were not 100% sharp or had levels issues or other probs that a lot of people wouldn't even realise existed.

I think they had a set criteria maybe as when they showed them they would say 'this one was picked because of colour' or 'they chose this cuz of the angle'.

I think they are all good shots, but not sure if they are spectacular.

Yes, they were pretty quick choosing them and I don't really think that the finalists were anything special (not that my photos are any better)! Oh well!
10/11/2005 08:24:41 AM · #43
The baby photo in particular - it's just kid in a bath smiling. I have seen a million of them, and, if given about five minutes of effort with one of the foster kids my mother takes on I think just about anyone floating around this site could generate something equivalent.
10/11/2005 08:45:53 AM · #44
You can now view the full size images.
Well my first reaction was right, I would say at least the top 500 shots here are better then those images.
Another site I frequent had the image link at 8.00 am on the 11th seems very quick, even more doubtful when you consider that they had 20000 images in by Friday 7th that left 30000 in the last 3 days.
Good luck to the five winners I'm hoping the cat wins, I don't normally like cat shots but I think that one shows the cats true character.

come on people
it's a TV show not real photo competition
judges instructions would have been pick
1 cute kid
1 pet
1 colorful
1 arty
1 macro

get lots of people to vote at 55c per vote (TV company would get maybe 20c of that) and lots of viewers for the ratings.... its all for the publicity of the show... it's basically a lottery

I entered a shot and will put in a vote for the arty one just to be in the draw for $25000 voter prize

I betcha that they use the photo somewhere for the show which is why they did the contest. Why else would they give away $50K? If thats teh case, I think they did do as you say and look for specifics.
