I am in the market for a lens. I have about $1,000 to spend. Would like to keep it around $750.
Here's what I have currently
D70
Tamron 28-200 (5.6)
I shoot for the local paper and also have been able to borrow a friends 70-200 (2.8)
Can naybody help me out with lens selection. I don't want to just throw money at the wall here. I wouldn't mind getting my own 70-200 (2.8) |

The 70-200 2.8 is an excellent choice, but if you can borrow one and there isnt an issue about that then maybe getting another lens in a different range may be good for now. I'm noticing a lot of press photographers are doing the almost super wide shots so a 12-24 or the 10-22 lens would be good. A good macro lens is always a good thing to have around too. |

Does anyone have any comments on something like this?

I know nothing about that lens but if it is f/8 and then you lose two stops for the teleconverter you better be in awfully bright light

I thought all photojournalists used something in the 17-40 ish range?
What about a Tamron/Sigma/Nikon lens in that range?

105 mm
This lens is great for macro and portraits, may be a good one to check out
The 50mm is also awesome.

Nick what do you have in your kit?
If you can borrow a 70-200mm 2.8L
How about something like this:
Tamron SP 200-500mm 5-6.3 I linked to Calumet as it is the same price as BH but this is actually the old north county camera in Escondido and you can go attach and try it out.
ED: Man I hate that place (website) it uses cookies in links
Here is the BH discription/price
Did you Diegans see that Bob Davis Camera in Del Mar had closed and when it reopens it will be another Nelson's like down in Little Italy?
Chalk La Stada this weekend! woot.
