the morning after the "your corner of the world" challenge started, i woke up to a really crappy score on a shot that i particularly liked. it depressed me and made me bitter.

so i did something that i've done before in this situation: i went into my preferences and turned off the score display on the homepage. no score, no update button -- cold turkey!

guess what? i love it. now i can come in and check my comments (you can see your comments by clicking on your challenge image's thumbnail) and read them in a somewhat unbiased manner. they're actually much more meaningful when i'm not reading them in the context of my current score.

the shot doesn't have a chance at winning (monday morning's score proved that), so instead of sweating the score all week i'm enjoying the comments and moving on.

i've done this in the past and found it to be quite cathartic. try it for a week or so and see how your attitude improves. it's also fun to surprise yourself with your score at the end of the challenge.

just a suggestion...

I have done that in the past a couple of times and I feel better :)

Interesting strategy. Valid assessment is used to determine 'where you are' and 'where you need to go'. Voting is such a nonsensical activity here that most of the tme I am amused more than anything. I like your idea and am glad you feel better using it.

blasphemer!

After seeing a 5.36 this morning on my coffee shop entry, being mistaken for a jjbeguin shot,
plus a couple of very complimentary comments, I shut off the update button.

jjbeguin quality at 5.36??? Way too confusing for me.

I agree, even with a good score, the update button is a really horrific temptation. I turned it off (didn't enter) for over two months. That too was liberating!

It is so interesting to see how a score can at times create such a rotten feeling....especially when there was such high hopes......

thanks, azoychka, for that suggestion! i keep having to remind myself that my photo doesn't fit the dpc aesthetic, but i like it. what a great option to only display comments...

...now would you all go out and comment, please? 128 views, 96 votes, and two comments so far. i'm trying to comment on every one in this challenge (beyond the "nice shot" stuff).

so as a word of preemptive apology, i hope my comments don't offend...i'm trying to comment the way i wish i would be commented upon: what works in the photo for me, and what doesn't work in the photo for me (with ideas coming from my lowly technical level).

thanks again for the suggestion. my self-esteem thanks you, too!
