So.. how can one tell the difference between limitations of their camera versus limitations in their skill/abilities?

I'm becoming rather frustrated with the way some of my images turn out and I want to be honest with myself as to whether its simply my crappiness or because my camera can only do so much.

I'm taking a beginning photography (film) course but I feel impatient already (we've only had one class!), like I already know what's being taught, just not the proper terminology for it.. but then I go out to shoot digitally and on average I'm more disappointed than not.

I can take some photographs I'm okay with and a few that make me ecstatic.. but for the most part they seem lackluster.

Is this me or is this my camera?

For example, when I entered my "Corner of the World" photograph I figured it would fall in the 4.5-5.0 range and I knew that from the quality out of the camera because I just wasn't able to capture what I wanted. If this is very much a result of using a somewhat lesser camera that's at least reason to hope. If not, I feel like I'm doomed to mediocrity!

Gah.

Anyway. The camera I'm currently using is an Olympus D-580Z / X-400. I'd try and link the name to something useful, like specs but.. I'm challenged in that arena.

Any thoughts?

a better camera will help you with speed, (not missing a shot) and u can use different lenses for different effects.

besides that though, if one can see/set up a photograph well, most cameras will capture jsut whats in front of them. its your job to make whats in front of you interesting.

if its quality issues stuff like that, a new cam might help i guess.
Also...learn the proper terminology for whats being taught. lots of people who already know a lot about photography can skill gain new insight from a beginner photo course. To be honest youll probly learn more in your film class with your film slr, seeing how different setting effect the look of the end result etc. withh your film cam, itd help you to learn a lot by writing down exposure settings for each frame if u can afford the time and inconvenience.

that's basically a point and shoot camera isn't it...no fancy lenses, etc. Try reading this tutorial:

I think you have some good composition in a lot of your shots, but DPC'ers can be very tough voters. Everyone has different tastes and perceptions for what is a "good" photo. I'd say don't give up, just save those $$ and invest plan to invest in a dSLR one day.
