RMNP is nw of Denver approx. 50+ miles.
The Central spot in Colorado would be Buena Vista area. The Collegate Range from Leadville south to Salida (on the west) and the Mosquito Range (on the northeast) and several nice lakes (Twin, Turquoise, Clear Creek and several others). There are many 14,000ers from Massive south to Shavano. Its really nice this year, wildflowers are the best in years do to last years drought. I think were talking about 60 miles w. of Springs; a bit more for Denver. Van - in Pueblo |

Great place, just came back from there (spent about a week last week). Though, the waterfals are more like cascades there with a few exceptions...

Here's a waterfalls shot from the WESTERN part of the RMNP:
It's Adams Falls, one of the "real" waterfalls (i.e. free falling rather than cascading) in the park, about 0.4 miles from the East Inlet Trailhead.
Watch for Rainbows as well :)

I'm thinking the long-haul trips are out for me in the near future. If there are others who can't make it to Northern CO or Grand Junction/Eastern Utah GTG, I could do a day trip in/around the Springs. When I travel to other places, I make photography a priority. I get so busy with work and everything else in our lives here that I haven't gone on a good photo shoot of the Colorado Springs area. Garden of the Gods is something I've wanted to shoot for a long time... Palmer Park has some nice views as well.
Anyone up for a Springs trip instead of or in addition to the longer trips?

I'm definitely up for a Springs trip...I live here and I work 10min from Garden of the Gods. I see it on my way to work every morning. I even used it for the Post Card challenge.

I'll be riding from Sturgis, S.D. to Prescott, Az on August 7-9th ....
let me know where you all are going to meet. If it works out I would love a GTG with fellow DPCers.
p.s. not sure of our route, but right now it's flexible.

I'll be in RMNP this weekend. Just figuring which trail to do. So many to choose from, so many photographic oppurtunities. I will be camping out Sat night if there are any spaces left.

So at this point it looks like the consensus is Rocky Mtn. National Park. It sounds like a great idea and a lot of fun. Probably too far a drive for me because I have several trips in the coming weeks but if I have the oportunity I'll be there.

Just for informational purposes. Bear Lake Rd (to the main area people go in RMNP) is closed. Info here. //www.nps.gov/romo/visit/weather/bearlake.html
RMNP site //www.nps.gov/romo/
They are widening the road 2 FEET! The road is over 75 years old, but 2 FEET!! 2 feet more for people to stop on and block traffic.
I have not been up through there this year. I have been avoiding that part of the park, because of it. Even though I do want to hike Sky Pond Trail through there again.

I can do Colorado Springs anytime, 45 minutes from my house to downtown. My dates are open except week of Aug. 18, I have to teach a class in Alamosa. Van |

LOL. I was just there, and can still drive to Bear Lake.... the road widening will affect 2 years of traffic. Take the shuttle, it's better for the environment anyway :)
If you're there, check out Glacier Gorge..... nice area. Lots of people watching but nice area.

thanks for the info everyone. Any opinions on a good photogenic trail to take for backcountry hike and camp? I was thinking maybe Fern Lake, Chasm Lake, forgot the other one.

Lawn Lake trail. To Lawn Lake and branch off to Ypsilon Mtn/Lake, and Spectacle Lakes. Lawn Lake is bordered north by the Mummy Range. Awesome.

Jim,
Try the Dream/Lily Lake Trail to Lake Hiahia (Sp?), from Bear Lake. You can get some great shots of Halet's Peak and Hiahia is a glacier circ lake that is almost torquoise. Also, try the Cub Lake trail from Moraine Park. About two miles to lake, great shots of Long's Peak. Lots of elk and other wildlife from there. Lastly, the elk should be easily photographed on Trail Ridge Road, especially above timberline. Van |
