Just got a new R72 hoya filter for my Nikon D100. This will be my first attempt at IR photography. I know that I will not be able to see through the viewfinder with the filter on. My question: After I compose, focus and take the shot, will I be able to see the results in the CCD or not until I upload my picture to the computer? |

well, assuming you did your exposure times correctly, your LCD should display approximately what your computer would anyway.. So if it's too dark on your LCD, it'll prolly be too dark on your computer.

John, I usually set the EV compensation to overexpose by a couple of stops, compose, focus manually, then attach the filter and let the camera determine aperture and shutterspeed.
It is possible to take infrared pix with the D100 but it is not the perfect camera for it. I haven't played around with it too much, but I know it was much easier to get good results with my Canon PS Pro90.
Click here for an infrared shot and here for a shot of the same scene without the IR filter.
If you figure out some better settings to use, please let me know :)
Oh, and to answer your question, yes, you can see the result on the LCD after taking the pic :)

I don't know much about the D100 (except that I can't afford one) but I know on my Oly 5050, If I can see the picture in the LCD, it will come out good. If I can't, I know the camera may or may not be able to autofocus correctly. My old Oly 3000 wouldn't. I had to do Franziska's trick of screwing the filter on afterward. They still didn't turn out so well. Personally, I try to minimize the shutter speed as much as possible. The pictures always come out sharper.
Good luck. Once you get going, IR is a lot of fun, given the right kind of day.

I also recently got a R72 hoya filter. My first attempts didn't turn out very good at all. Any pointers from F707 or F717 owners?
