Hi. I know this isn't really related to DPC, but I spent an hour trying to find out a solution for this problem and I've come up with nothing. Perhaps there is someone here that can help me out.

This problem is in reference to the Windows XP System Taskbar where the Start Menu resides, usually found at the bottom of the screen. The toolbars mentioned are the ones which are visible in the right click menu from the taskbar area.

When I did a reboot today (actually by accident, I usually only reboot once a week), my computer came back with the toolbar all messed up.

There was an extra empty toolbar and there were two language bars. With the typical finnicking around and Windows repeatedly forcing the toolbar to two lines, I managed to get rid of that doubling and the extra invisible (empty) toolbar. Unfortunately, the basic system toolbar is currently DOUBLED. That means when I have a program open, it shows up TWICE on the taskbar. There are two bubbles for it.

If I try to slide the one over the other, the taskbar pops to two lines. ARGH! I do my best to try to keep my computer as uncluttered as possible. This is beyond ridiculous. I have turned off all toolbars that can be turned off and the problem persists.

Any help?

I had the same thing happen.

Try this:

Right click on the toolbar and go to properties. Choose, show quick launch. Click OK.
Then drag the seperator from the toolbar between the icons and the open area where applications show, over to the left causing the icon to fill under themselves. Try to drag the top toolbar down now. If still no joy, while the icons are spilling below, open a bunch of browser windows until they spill under as well. Try to drag the toolbar down again. That worked for me.

Over 15 years in the IT industry from Desktop to WAN and it took me over an hour to fix that one when it happened to me. Thanks Bill for the joy.

It came with a reboot, it went with a reboot.

My sister is a comp. science college graduate who usually comes to me when she has problems.

I assumed that as the problem happened on a fresh boot that my problem was not easily fixed by a reboot. Stupid me.

My sister said "that's just what Windows wants you to do, reboot and reboot and reboot and....."

FWIW, I also tried the same tricks you did, but got nowhere. I did discover that my language bar had triplicated at one point and was shown as Language bar, Language bar and The language bar. That's pretty odd, but I do have 3 language inputs for this computer (English, Trad. Chinese and Simp. Chinese), both handwritten and typed. I've never seen it add a language bar though.

I use Windows XP 2005 for Tablet PC. It is the latest full version of Windows and actually is pretty stable. It is actually a bit more cumbersome for the computer, having an extra 80MB of stuff to load on boot (including the Chinese). It is possible there was a bit of a buffer overload during the boot process. One day I'll upgrade my memory and put this thing up to a gig or so. I also plan to build a slipstream boot to get it moving faster. Photoshop does some weird things when I play with the levels sliders with the pen.

not sure you need it but...

if this happens again, try removing any extra memory devices (e.g flash card, camera, Ipod, etc)

this happens to a build i use for software testing a LOT... removal of USB root hub'd devices (see examaples) seems to fix this silly bug, that pop-up saying "new device..." seems to have one use...

hopes this helps some one...
