I admit I'm a n00b when it comes to photography (and many other things). So when we want to take a Macro shot (close up), is telephoto preferred, or is wide-angle preferred? I mean, in terms of aperture, which is better? Or gives a better focus/output? Any info at all would be appreciated.

The answer is actually 'it depends'.....

What effect are you trying for? What amount of DOF do you want?

With the camera set for wide angle and macro focus you can move in closer than if the camera is set for telephoto and macro focus. You could probably achieve the same effect with either by adjusting the aperture. Wide angle tends to give more DOF than telephoto all other things being equal.

I like zooming in and setting the aperture to f8 (max for my camera) to obtain the maximum DOF since focusing at these distances can be a bit tricky.
