What causes lines to appear perforated in a photo? I've only had this happen with vertical lines.

oops..I just checked a photo and it also happens with horizontal lines :-)

It usually happens with lines that are not quite true vertical or true horizontal. If the line has an actual thickness on the image of, say, one pixel and is against a contrasting color, then the interpolation algorithim may create background-color gaps.

It will also appear that way if you are zoomed out or in on an image and it is a relatively thin line.

And I just thought it was an automated way to show you where to crop :-P

Nah, those are the "marching ants"; actually, if you blow 'em up to 800% magnification you can see they are tiny marching potato bugs :-)

The poor resizing of photos?
I know that this isnt a college course , but could you explain?

I didnt resize the photo. It came outta my camera with that appearance.I have a cheap camera. Could that be the problem?

Hi KMD600, I have a konica-minolta too and its only half the pixels you have with yours. So I believe it is not caused by your camera. do you have any examples of the jagged lines you were talking about?

How is your camera set up.. are you getting the best quality setting or are you using standard JPEG?

I remember my very first Sony camera was set to smallest file size and i thought the camera was a pile of rubbish but then i set it up properly and this confirmed my first impression but more clearer..

Seriously check the settings are maxed out for quality and file size.

Im no expert but have noticed on my printer settings it gives the option to print with perforated lines or not? Do have a look at your printer settings?
