Can anyone give me some insight as to why my monitor would black when I go to a new page in IE? It just happens very briefly then it's fine again. I'm thinking it's my graphics card. So far it only occurs in Internet Explorer. Could it be a virus? Norton hasn't picked anything up. Could it be my new installation of CS2 (had the trial first) causing conflicts? Anyone?

have u tried it in Firefox or another webbrowser ?
I think it's caused by vid.card tho, kinda weird if it's norton let stand CS2

keep us updated :)

Haven't tried other browers yet. I was thinking Norton in terms of Anti-Virus; it's auto update and when I hear of a new virus I always check Norton update manually; so I think I'm pretty well virus free. Gonna have to get my vid card checked I guess.

Nearly 45000 members strong and only 1 has an opinion?

If its only IE it suggests its a software problem, however I had some problems similar a while back. Computer would run for a while, then the monitors would die. As it turned out, the fan on my video card had stopped spinning and it was overheating.

Get a second opinion when it comes to virus scanning, norton is nortorious for being the first virus software to be attacked by viruses. There is various online virus scanners. I would recommend trying the trend micro online scanner HouseCall

Worth checking at least :)

Just a thought, if you are linking it to installing CS2, it could be the Adobe Gamma Correction tool (if thats installed, as thats the only thing in CS that might effect your monitor if photoshop isn't running.)

Try disabling that process and see what happens. Maybe Im barking up the wrong tree.

Cheers,
Simon

There might be something to that; I did recently calibrate with Adobe Gamma. I can't think why it might cause the monitor to do this but you never know.

I had a very similar issue with a friends PC just the other day, it was a nightmare to fix, this PC was also flashing black when i opened some folders too though EG-my documents, my computer etc but mostly with IE and if i tried to scroll with the mouse down the webpage it would leave a smudge and freeze slightly..

OK now on to the repair process. Im not a pro just a trial and error man so i dont know for sure what fixed it but this is what i did.

Reinstalled the latest vid card drivers and the motherboard drivers too, then i reinstalled the DirectX drivers too, I had considered it being a bios setting maybe something to do with an overclocked CPU or a timing miss-match with RAM, but im sure that is not an issue with YOUR machine.. I would say the first thing to do would be to re-instal DIRECTX sorry i cannot offer a more professional opinion.

Monitors usually go black flashing because they internally are reseting.. you might wanna try checking the refresh rate for the monitor too.

Since my last post on my monitor problems it has gotten worse. In the picture above you'll notice that my video card is combining applications on the screen, ie. Outlook Express and IE. It doesn't seem to be refreshing quickly enough. Could this be a CPU or RAM problem? Or is it likely the vid card?

- Right-click desktop
- Properties
- Settings
- Advanced
- Troubleshoot

And try setting 'Acceleration' to 'None'

Work up from there and see if the problem appears again.

This is one method to eliminate video card / driver problems.

Thanks. I'll give it a try.

I turned down the acceleration to none and it seems to be working fine now. So I guess this confirms it's a vid card problem?

Video card or video driver. Check the manufacturers website for the latest driver version.

A few months ago I had problems with a video card / driver that kept freezing the PC (blue screen of death). I spent *weeks* messing about with drivers. In the end I decided I'd spent too much time trying to solve the problem and just bought a replacement Radeon on ebay for £30...

But I'd say check your driver version first. And make sure you have the latest version of DirectX installed.

Thanks again.

Aye, i used to get similar effects with a cheapy old dual-head. Actually, you don't need to turn acceleration off. There's a rather arcane option, let me find it for you...

right-click on the desktop, go properties, settings tab, click advanced, troubleshoot tab, untick "enable write combining". Acceleration should make no difference, but disabling it will probably just slow things down, i doubt it would affect anything connected to your problem. Give this a try.

Also, the problem i had manifested most strongly when i moved around large windows (make sure you have preview windows while moving enabled). That would give me some slowdown, and often crash my entire pci bus, actually :) That's a good way to test for it.
