This morning I had two emails from service'at'paypal.com (I inserted 'at' in place of @) - except they weren't really from paypal. How do I know? I don't even have an account at paypal - my wife does, but she uses an entirely different email from mine.

I went to the paypal website and they have a security section. They have a reporting email to send this kind of stuff to: spoof'at'paypay.com. After forwarding the bogus emails I got this back from paypal:

excerpt: After review, we can confirm that the email you received was not sent by
PayPal. Any website which may be linked to this email is not authorized
or used by PayPal. ...

I found this all rather interesting. If you've rec'd anything like this I would be happy to share more details from paypal's response (send a PM if you want). They also cover what to do (key factor if you actually do have an account with them) at their website in the security area.

Take care.

I get about 10 of these a day. No big deal as long as you follow the basic rule of NEVER GIVING ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION VIA EMAIL. A spam filter helps eliminate this sort of stuff also.

That scam has been going around for quite a while. I used to get at least one spoof email a day, but things have finally died down. There's an ebay version of the scam as well.

I've had the same e-mail address for almost 11 years now (for reasons I won't bore you with), and I get about 200-300 spams a day that doesn't get filtered by my ISPs spam filter. Out of those I bet 30 or so are fishes. i used to freakout when I got them, but not I just keep hitting delete.

Paypal will always use your full name on their website...whenever I get any emails that link to paypal I ignore them or I type in 'www.paypal.com' to see what they need from me...

Scary stuff, I almost fell for it the first time...

Well I'm feeling pretty good then. Considering how long I've been using the internet and email (1991) and this is the first phishing expedition sent my way... ;^)

If you worry about financial security with paypal, setup a different e-mail address for paypay only. Don't use it for anything else. When you do this the "phishing" and junk paypal e-mail will go to your more used e-mail, the legitimate will go to the more controlled one. You'll find that 99% of all paypal notices do not come from them as does most bank stuff. I know it's easy to have bills and statements from banks and credit cards come via e-mail ....but WHY all you are doing is asking for trouble. Anything confidential or private use snail mail, thats why you pay them interest and charges. Your security is more important than saving them money. Why worry about weither to open a credit card statement that may be phishing? Somethings are just better left to the mail man.

I usually get one or so a week from either PayPal or Ebay telling them that my status is in danger (???) and that I need to follow the below link and update my account.

hmmm, yea.

I don't have an account with either of them.
