A local museum in Los Angeles is having an award ceremony and want me to photograph the people. It should take about 4 hours or so. Can anyone tell me what the going rate is? They said that they will "pay my rate" but seeing as I shoot for fun, I don't have a rate.

I was also thinking about shooting in RAW and post processing but am now leaning toward shooting in JPEG and giving them the images on a CD Rom at the end of the event.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I think that if they are going to get the pictures, and you aren't going to make any profit off of them, charge at least 50 and hour. I think that is reasonable since you won't see any money from selling the photos. Usually, event photographers get money from selling the photos, and thus don't really get paid hourly, or that much for that matter.

What city do you live in? I would charge at least 600-700 dollars.

I live in Los Angeles. I think they'd decline if I asked for that much. I'm thinking now about one hundred an hour. Total will probaly end up at $400 then.

I think that probably sounds fair.

If all you have to do is one batch edit to all the pics and not go into them individually.

100 an hour seems cheap for LA. Ask this question on fredmiranda and see what they say. I got 100 an hour in kansas.

I'd tell them $150/hr plus expenses. If they seem like they might back out, try to find out why. You can always negotiate. Maybe there is something they can barter with that could cover part of your fee.

Well, I got the reply back. They normally pay $200/hr and like the idea that I offered, which is to bring my laptop and to give them a JPEG and a RAW version of the images on a CD ROM. Good for me as I don't have to post process and I walk away after "working" for 2 hours.

Thanks for your input guys.

So your getting more than my original estimate of $700...good for you. All people need to learn how to and what to charge. I don't know why, but most photographers greatly undercharge for their services.
