The Spyder2 instructions say to set the brightness and contrast at the factory defaults. I have a 19" Princeton LCD and there is no "factory reset". They warn that using the grid on an LCD may not work well. My calibration makes the monitor very dark. Any suggestions on where to set b & c to start calibration?

I have a Lacie monitor and for contrast I set it to the highest.
For black point I follow the instructions here. I do this before I start calibrating with Spyder2 so I just click Next when it asks to adjust black and white points since you've done the adjustments beforehand.

Hope that helps.
