That buying a camera that costs 5 times more than my last camera wouldn't instantly make my photos 5 times better. Going from point and shoot to DSLR isn't that smooth of a transition.

Welcome to the real world. Learning is half the fun. Shoot outside of challenges if you really want to learn a lot.

| In fact, many people find that their photos take a nosedive after they upgrade to a better camera (e.g, from a P&S to an SLR). Be patient. After a few months, you won't be able to comprehend that you ever used anything less. You pics will improve as you master the tools. |

I did that earlier this year. It was a little disheartening at first!

No...but it sure is a rush, isn't it?
ED: But seriously the number one thing that I had a hard time with at first is the fact that you get to control sharpness with dSLR they come out soft so you can adjust to photos...I immediately started blaming lenses until I figured that out.

Haha yeah, I ran out and took a few pics. Came back to check them out. Thought for sure I got a defective camera.

I tend to agree but only partially. most P&S cameras (like mine especially) do not allow any form of manual controls at all. And the in-camera processing of the photos often leave much to be desired. With a DSLR especially with RAW output, the options are broadened a lot, especially in the image quality department. Also, manual controls allows more room for creativity, ie. long shutter, aperture priority controls, etc.
edit: and lets not forget all the camera kits and lense that you could attach onto a DSLR as compared to a P&S camera. Go get yourself an IR filter and have some fun :)
