Hi,

I recently got myself a canon 20d with a Sandisk Extreme III 1gig CF card and have found that I cannot access raw files... They simply do not appear on the CF card when accessing through the camera with explorer, unlike JPEG\'s which seem to be working fine. The images are on the card as I can view them on the camera and with EOS Viewer Utility which for some reason will not let me interact with the files in any way besides deleting/viewing thumbnails (even JPEG’s). I have installed the windows update to view raw files and have attempted to use photoshop and other third party programs like rawshooter essential to find the files. Nothing has worked, I can only assume there is something wrong with the camera / card, I\'ve also tried these steps on two computers so I think I can rule out them. My final option as I see it is to get a CF card readerâ€Â¦ and even then I doubt it will work, any advice / help would be greatly appreciatedâ€Â¦

Thanks.

Firmware updated? Previous firmware have corrected problems with RAW and/or CF card problems.

Try uploading RAW Essentials. Can the RAW be viewed on the camera lcd?

So you're saying that you are plugging your camera into the computer and accessing the files that way?

If so ... I have no experience (related to access RAW files that way), but wow... even if it worked, it seems like it would be awfully slow.

Run out and buy a $15 card reader. Make sure it says USB 2.0 "hi-speed" (don't buy one that doesn't say hi-speed on it). You'll absolutely love it. It'll copy the entire contents of your 1G card in 5 minutes or less.

Try using the software that came with the 20D....explorer will not work to view the files...you need to transfer them to the computer first, or view via software. I had the same experience when I first started shooting RAW with my 20D...well...the 20D I used to have! 8**(

If you are running Windows XP install the Windows RAW Thumbnail Viewer to browse the images on disk/CF.

I definately recommend giving Canon Digital Photo Professional(came with your 20D and be sure that if it is the 1.0 version to update to the v1.6.1) a chance for working with RAW and JPGs...It is really a sweet program to use.

Thanks for the advice but I have tried using Raw thumbnail viewer, and the canon software. Yes Raw images do show up on my camera LCD viewer its just accessing them on the computer that’s the problem.

I tried to update my firmware again just in case something was wrong with that, but I couldnt move anything onto the card =/ I then tried to format it, which didn’t change anything.

So I'm definitely assuming there’s something wrong with the card, which I guess is better than it being a camera fault. I'm gonna grab a card reader today and try and run the recovery disk.

I can't see how it would be your card if you can view the through your camera which means they are on your card. Can you view and download jpegs on your computer.
Good idea to get hold of a reader and try it that way.

Ok I got a card reader, and everything works fine. So it seems that when connected directly to my computer the camera fails to allow proper access to the card, should I be concerned by this? Or just use the card reader and leave it at that.

Again thanks for the input.

What you describe is normal behavior. When the cam is connected to the 'pooter via USB, RAW files will not be visible. This affects the 1-series cams as well, you can see RAW files when tethered with FireWire but not with USB. Since the 20D does not have FireWire capability, the card reader is the only solution. It's not a problem with USB, it is a Canon problem (or possibly an intentional design "feature").
BTW, if you have FireWire on your machine, a good FireWire reader, such as the Lexar RW-019, will beat USB 2.0 speeds by about 4x. Yep, that's right, 4x faster.

The following discussion has a way to copy RAW files from a Canon 20D to Windows XP via USB.

1) Open EOS Viewer Utility after connecting the camera and turning it on.
2) Navigate to the RAW file folder on the camera in the EOS Viewer Utility explorer.
3) In the EOS Viewer Utility explorer, drag the folder to a location on the computer, for example, My Documents\My Pictures

The folder will be copied from the card to the new location and will then be viewable in Windows Explorer.
