One of the rules of thumb of house painting to see if you are going too far before you put the paint on the building. Think of what colors you would wear as a suit, what color shirt and what color tie to compliment your suit.
The tone of your neighbourhood is the equivalent to the outing you would wear the suit to. Some areas are funky nightclubs, some are straightlaced board metings.
The body of the house is the suit, the trim and bargework is the shirt, and the front door is the tie.

What do the other houses in the neighborhood look like? Are you looking subtle, or something a little more dramatic?

Hey - that house is right around the corner from me! Seriously - what were they thinking??

What was the paint company thinking?!?
(There's one in my neighborhood too!)

....hmmmmm, challenge suggestion that those tasteful Icelanders couldn't touch?...I wonder....

Well, heck, then all he needs is some good window treatments!

any other ideas? we're comin' down to crunch time!!

here are my faves so far:

(needs an accent color)

although, VERY similar to the house 2 doors down (gold with burgundy shingles)

i know i was against the brown, but this lighter brown is working on me. not sure about the yellow trim, and i think the gable color should be something earthy.

any other ideas? you guys may not think so, but you're helping a lot! (even godzilla, the hooters motorcycle chick, and the tuxedo windows are giving me a good laugh, which i definitely need!)

Now those are some really nice color combinations Butterflysis. It's amazing to see how much different the house looks with different colors. I like all you posted. Couldn't pic a favorite among yours.

ahh...but at least in YOUR sleep you see it painted.

i see it with half of the corner boards on, railroad ties holding up the front porch, a giant blue tarp nailed to the front, and all of the flowers trampled from my working on it -- and that's when i'm AWAKE!! :) :)

god, i can't wait to paint this thing and be done for the winter. i'm going to get it finished, knock out the rest of the kitchen (i know, di! i still need to put pictures online!) and hang up the toolbelt for a while!!!

(great colors, jen! i really like 1, 3, & 4.)

Chin Up! Just think, when it's all done you can take a deep breath, look at it and say, "I did that". What a great feeling, eh? :-)

I'm glad to hear that. IMO earth tones is the way to go. They are easy to live with int he long run.

Looks great! And just in time for winter, too!
You're on your own for the curtains...I stink at those. ;-)

w00t! looks great! Just in time too, not much painting weather left... actually none in my neck of the woods, LOL.

Great colors!! Looks really good. Thanks to you, we had to go and paint our house too. OK, so we had to replace some bad siding on our chimney and decided to repaint while we were at it, so it wasn't entirely your fault. :-) But it was alot more fun trying to figure out which colors using your neat little PS method.

Your digs are really coming together nicely. Must be really fullfilling knowing you did it yourself. Well done. :-)

What a great little house!! I love what you have done with it. The restoration is wonderful. Any pictures of the inside?
