Not being independently wealthy has its drawbacks.

I'm in a "Want a macro telephoto" frame of mind. I'm currently debating between the sigma 105 2.8 and the sigma 150 2.8.

I've been perusing reviews on the net and now feel it's time to ask the all-seeing DPCers:

Does anyone have any hands-on heads up with these two lenses? Or does anyone have a better suggestion for that price range (~$500+/-)?

If things go right we can turn this thread into a lens flame war :)

Edited to bold 105 and 150 to make distinction from typo in thread title.

I don't have experience with these two particular lenses, but if you plan of shooting alot of macro two features really make the 150 shine. First in formost is the built-in tripod collar. This comes in handy for easier adjustments from portrait to landscape and better balance on a head or focusing rail. Second the little extra distance to get to 1:1 will allow more lighting options and a little leeway in timid subjects.

Thank you Steven, good points. I am leaning towards the 150 already, you're helping to push me over the edge.

Anyone else?

I have the 105mm. It's a great lens. Portable, easy to use, sharp and with manual or auto focus. I didn;t consider the 150 because I thought it would be less flexible. I felt the 105 was sort of in the middle of the 'usual' 60mm to 150/180mm macro range. I am in the process of trying a reversed 50mm at the end of it to see what I get. If it works then this gives me more flexibility.

Can't compare quality with the 150 because I've never tried it but I've uploaded a couple of images taken with the 105 for you to look at.

Wow. Those are beautiful photos Joe. You bring up the other half of my train of thought with the flexibility, thank you for your input with those great photos and comments.
