I am taking a trip to California and is the first time I have flown in a while. Is it very difficult to get a digicam on domestic flights? Or will I get tied up by security for hours on end?

Not a problem at all.

I have never had a problem taking it onto a plane, but have been asked not to use the camera whilst on the plane (on two occasions).

Just make sure the camera has fully charged batteries. Security could ask you to turn on the camera to ensure it actually works.

Typically photos while in flight are okay but they dont allow pictures while on the ground due to sparks from re-fuelling caused by flahes sometimes.. its a very small risk.. but none the less still a possiblity.

edit: sometimes the flight attendants will ask you to put your camera away on landing as well because they want all electronic devices in the off position when securing the cabin

Have a wonderful trip :)

I fly all the time with a small digicam on my laptop bag strap. It is in a case out in plain view, not even inside the bag. I have never been given a glance about it, no one has ever even bothered to look at it out of it's case. I would'nt sweat it for a second.
