If I gave someone a one I would be sure that I felt it deserved it and would like to explain myself. If I receive a 1 I would EXPECT a comment not a 'hit and run'.

thanks for your comment on this though.

I don't think people should have to justify or explain their vote, they should only do so if they so desire. I've been on this site long enough to have seen this discussed several times over the years (almost 3 for me) and I don't really think what you propose is every gonna happen. Nothing personal, but as you can see from the other posts on this thread, most people just think it's a terrible idea.

I agree with almost everyone that has replied. I don't have the time to enter all the contest, actually, I have only entered one, and that bothers me, but mostly, I like the fact that a photo gets hundreds of votes, and only a few comments. The comments I got on my photo weren't all helpfull, and they were certainly not all good, which I appreciated, but they gave me a real good sense of why my photo got what it did. I don't need to know everyone's reason. Plus, sometimes, a picture doesn't do anything for me, so I give it a five or a six, it's not good, not bad, but I just don't have any sort of opinion on it, I just feel that it's not one of the more interesting photos. People shouldn't get offended by what others think or say, they should just be happy that they have the opportunity to share their work.

Then this could give rise to another problem.... that being the very distinct possibility that people would scroll through the thumbnails, pick the photos they like and comment on those.... leaving the lesser images to once again wallow in solitude.

While I can and do appreciate your concerns... this is NOT the solution.

Ray

this is a possiblity.

something we would soon discover, but i wonder how it would really play out. even the worst images still get comments.

thanks again for your thoughts on this.

Still I have to wonder why someone would be opposed admitting what score they gave. I know it takes more time, is that the only reason?

also something bearmusic said makes me wonder. If I had to give scores with reasons would I cave and score higher than I should because I wouldn't want to get chewed out. Not sure, because as I see it that is going on in reverse anyway.

if you want lots of comments, you can either:

- submit a ribbon-worthy photo (check out all the POST-vote comments)

or

- submit a brown-ribbon photo (that's utterly BAD to the voters)

EDIT: before anyone use a flame-thrower on me, its just a funny fact in DPC :p

I agree with bear_music. The way I see it, do you feel like you have to explain every decision you make to others? Probably not. It's not a matter of time alone, it's a matter of people wanting to have the choice to explain why they gave someone a low score or not. I personally don't want to be forced to justify my vote. If people were forced to do this then they would vote higher than they normally would because of fear of retaliation in the form of nasty PMs, and that seems to be a common occurence. When you vote on elections, do they require you write your name on the ballot and justify your vote? No because if they did then people wouldn't vote or vote unfairly. I don't feel very strongly about most things on DPC, but this is one of the few I do feel strongly about.

yes you're right.

It's back to freedoms. We would be taking away freedom from people who don't abuse the system because of the few that do. This sounds too familiar.

thanks again.
