RUN, don't walk, RUN...to good to be true. It could be a upgrade only. The only best deal that I have ever seen is the discount you get if you are a college student. When I was school last year, I saw that I could buy the whole adobe package for nearly 400 bucks, that's 4 applications........I'm not suggesting to cheat the system, but buying through a college is the best deal (need photo ID at most)....I bought the photoshop upgrade 9.0 two years ago a the MU store. Cost $60 from $150.00...I wasn't a student at that time, but they seem not to mind that I wasn't. They sold me the software...there are little known secrets to deals out there that they don't let you know. At (this) college store, they'll let you buy software, but not any hardware...However, cheaper software is nice too.
The only problem that I encountered with buying software from the college store. Parking! I had to walk nearly 4 blocks to get there. But, take picture of the cute girls on campus on the way there. It's a win-win situration. :))

If you ordered online, don't wait a week like I did to see if it got processed. I called them up and it was determined that the order didn't go through, so they put me on to telephone sales. They said it failed because my Elements wasn't registered (but I know it actually was) so they re-registered the product and I re-order. Get this. Yesterday I checked my Visa statement, I got charged twice. Now they're saying that the original sale actually did go through and there's a second box on the way to me. I asked why their system didn't pick this up, considering it's a "limited to one per household" deal, and was told that telephone sales and online sales are on two different systems. So now to get my Visa payment back, which could take up to 3 weeks, I have to destroy the software once it arrives. I have to notify them upon arrival and they'll take the serial number out of circulation once I have signed a document to that effect.
Be careful. Just because they make the best image editting software doesn't necessarily mean they have the resources for the right hand to recognize what the left hand is doing.

Thanks Owen.
I got an email saying it was processed. I'll wait until Monday afternoon to check the order status. Don't know if I can wait a week... :)

NP. I got an email saying mine was processed also. That's why I waited so long to check on it initially; I was shocked when the "telephone sales" guy said my order didn't go through. :)

Photoshop CS2 for Windows - Upgrade from Dell @$153.95 if you search the net you might find some coupons to get it below that price. You must have register version of Photoshop to upgrade.

DHL says my SW is on the truck with the courier as of 9:27AM this morning. Do you think if I plaster my face to the window it will come faster?

You people Rock! I was sitting here on one of these sites with the Angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. The Devil was winning the battle and I almost justified buying CS2 for $80. After reading this thread I am going to bite the bullet and get the retail version. At least now with a registered version I will be in the good graces with Adobe (not to mention the U.S Government). I knew this site would set me straight. Thanks all. In the end, I guess sending my CC info to thieves is not the best idea.

Even at $299 Photoshop is no bargain. With so many other good quality photo-editing programs available for far less, and even some for free, the so-called "industry standard" with it's high price is fast becoming obsolete.

On what do you base that absurd claim of obsolesecence? Photoshop is the industry standard because it's used by virtually everyone int he industry. For professional graphic designers there's really no alternative, for a lot of reasons, not all of them compelling but that's neither here nor there.
I'd agree with you 100% if you had said that for the average photographer PS is not necessary or even desirable, given the variety of less-expensive or free alternatives in the marketplace now.

Having worked in graphics arts for many years, both in print and in video, I will attest to the fact that there is no software out there that will do ALL that Photoshop CAN do, especially with plugins. Most people will never use 1/10th of its' power. CS2 is a combination of some very powerful programs that work together with ease.
It's worth every penny to the person who can really use it.
That being said, and back to the original post, if the copy you are getting is pirated warez, why would you give someone $70 for it?
I'm sure it can be found for free...

I didn't expect to get agreement from people who have spent a career learning and using Photoshop. And I was referring to photo-editing, not graphic art or design. I'd go farther than the "average photographer" that Robert mentions. I think almost all photographers can do without the expense and laborious learning curve of the "industry standard", including professionals and serious hobbyists like we have here at dpc.
Are you long time shoppers (bear_music and Ombra_foto among others) aware that Paint Shop Pro's latest version accepts all plugins written for Photoshop? Not sure but I think the same is true for the GIMP. I think that is a trend you will see spread in the future.
I'll repeat what I have said in the past -- If you really need Photoshop your employer will buy it for you.
There are people that believe you cannot produce a high quality photograph unless you use a lens that has a capital "L" in it's name.
It's your money, spend it wisely.

Having your credit card number abused to purchase drugs and weapons for the Russian Mafia: Priceless. |
It is my understanding, from an un-named source, that adobe actually donates proceeds to the Russian Mafia - so F it, I'm going for the $69 version. |
