You could run it like olimpic judging and throw out the top and bottom few percent of the vote, but frankly the ribbon winners almost always deserve their accolades, and they win despite getting their ones and twos. If some lovely artistic and wildly creative shots get hammered, I would put it down to bad taste rather than some few thinking that by voting down a great shot their one vote among many will skew the curve. The folks who win alot of ribbons seem to regularly comment favorably on the better shots ( unless they deviously comment well and then hit the 1, but I can't see that happening). If it ain't broke don't fix it. Unless it is a levee of course. |

FWIW, you have every right to give a very low score for whatever reason you choose. Your rights are spelled out in the rules, and there's nothing there that denies you this right.
And also FWIW, and for those who are newer and aren't aware, there is a super-secret vote scrubber applied at the end of voting which deals with the worst case scenarios. The details are kept secret to keep the truly trollish from finding ways to circumvent them. |

I think this is ascribing a whole lot of pettiness to a group that is entirely smaller than one would guess.
Maybe they are just stupid and think that 1 is the TOP mark they can give the pictures.
That's right, A new rule of thumb: When in doubt, ascribe stupidity over pettiness.
I seriously doubt that most of the people who are here would vote others low to boost their own pictures. This seems rather circular. In that if they would do it, someone else would do it to them. Golden rule in negative. The Rusty Rule?
I kind of like the idea of having 1's and 2's require a comment, but a lot of people here don't seem to like the idea of being "policed" as voters.
I offered a couple of suggestions as to how to improve quality of comments and votes and all were ignored and shot down for similar reasons.
I prefer this style of voting over Curve based.
There are reasons that people may be giving 1's to pictures that are really good. Some people feel that people are posting pictures that don't meet the challenge specs just because the person posting liked the picture for whatever the reason. The rules state that you are not allowed to vote to DQ on this reason, so voting is the way. Whether it is narrow minded or not, it is still their right to make their opinions.
If you don't want other people's honest opinions on your pictures, call your mother and keep your pictures on your home computer. Honest does include misguided and misunderstanding.
I don't have much time for voting myself, particularly with the bigger challenges lately, but when I submitted my first pic, I made sure I took the time to vote on my peers in a fair and subjective way. I managed to comment on more than 60% of the shots I voted on as well. I feel that was a fair use of give and take for services on this website. |

i dont really see what the big deal is with the voting..the people who win deserve to be there and they get votes of 1's too. the people who get the lower scores deserve to be where they are. I've never heard any complaints about a photo that wasnt in the top 20 that should have been (and i mean a RANT thread), if there is it isnt many. The only people who complain are the ones who's average score is around 4 or 5..if you took those votes of 1 and changed them to 10's you still wouldnt win because more than likely your photo is not worth it. The winners win because they have great photos and you lose because you dont..suck it up and learn how to win.
