For me, I have 95 votes, 0 comments, a picture of a homo-sapien wich is highlighted directly in a thirds position. the rest of the picture has full tonal range from darks to highlights without losing tonality(on my monitor0, and yet I'm getting a 4.7ish. I have no idea what people are thinking. Everyone I have showed the picture to outside of DPC says they would at least mark it over a 5, usually the response is 7.
I'm still wondering if people don't understand the rule of thirds, or if I don't understand it... I thought it was pretty straightforward.
I've voted on 94% of the pictures and like 25% of those seem to have no reference to thirds, either in fore/middle/back side to side, or a subject in a cross section.
I'd just like to know if people are voting me down because they don't like it, or because they don't feel it meets thirds.
oh yeah, scores....

My question about placement is because I am fairly new and have grown a great deal since entering these challenges and getting great feedback and support. When I looked up "rule of thirds" in regards to portraits, I found that the eyes should be at the intersecting points.
I turned on my ruler feature and measured all the shots I thought were applicable. I entered one, but wasn't committed to it - when a family emergency came up and boom that one went out. I am not unhappy with my entry and it meets the requirements (according to what I read), but two of my three comments indicate that the image is centered...arg!
Not to give my shot away, but the image has a crooked look -- looking upward toward the camera. Although the body is off to one side and background on the other the face is coming up towards the camera and crooked to where the eyes line up right on the intersections. Oh well...first time I've let it get to me - no biggie.

What determines the point of interest, on the rule of thirds. Is'nt the point of interest the main thing peeps look at.Can't a pic be centered and the face be in the point of interest.I am getting alot of grief for my entry on this. I'm a newb and never heard of the rule of thirds.I see alot of peeps are putting three things in their pics, so maybe I am not the only confused one. Any guidance is appreciated. |

I'm on the right side of 5!!! Sorry, first comp and I was hoping to break 5. I too am getting comments about my pic being too centered. Can't an image be centered and have a point of interest within that image on the thirds line? A facial feature, a lit window, an apple in the tree etc? |

I guess (considering my pictures score) not. Presuming you meant that the "main" point of interest was in a thirds "crosshair".
I found an article on photoinf.com that pretty much sums up the rule of tirds, it's importance, when to break it, and the importance of visual weight. This might help some. I thought it was good.

LOL. Started at 6.5 after 21 votes and now at 5.5 after 100..... Usually it is lower after the night and higher after. This time it is the other way around :-) |

Oh this is even better,
This tool automatically places golden mean/spiral/triangle lines on a picture that you can input from a static web address. Very cool.

Where have all the voters gone??
Is it supper time in the US?
My score hasn't moved for about an hour!
I was waiting for just one more vote before I went to bed ( it's 1.30am here) and I'm tired!
Oh well
Goodnight

I've finished voting on thirds actually. I'll not be adjusting scores today. Need a fresh and rested eye.

I think I've pressed that update button about a million times in the last 24 hours. Now I know what y'all mean when you say you're addicted to the update button.

My score has been pretty steady at 5.1 to 5.2 the whole time. I'm not happy with it, but it's been so consistent I can't really argue.
The comments though are making me insane. It's so hard to take some of it without responding. LOL, it's all good, it's just funny how I and half my commenters love the photo and the other half informs me it's out of focus. I don't know whose eyes are bad, mine or theirs! |

From past challenges, I have 1-3, 4-4's, 2-5'. But I have a 6.0078 on the rule of thirds! I am thrilled! |

OK I've now got two comments! 115 votes and an av of 5.22!
Trouble is, both my comments are one word each and both are exactly the same!
There's got to be something else to say!

I don't know how I keep doing this, but I've had no less than 9 comments for every challenge I've entered. I consider myself lucky that my photos seem to invite commentary... from both sides of the spectrum, no less... it's either liked or it's not. Thanks!!!

Eh, I suck in this one :(
Wasn´t really expecting this one to do really well so I can´t really say that I am too surprised but at least I like it plenty and I know what could have made it so much cooler. Wish I had more comments though. I am going to vote on bubbles and give as many comments as I can as I don´t vote on challenges I am in, I find myself very biased and give out lower scores when I am voting on a challenge I am in.

It's like a frikken teeter-totter. For every ten I get, I get a 1 just to balance it out. Been hovering like that for two days. Can't complain too much, atleast it hasn't gone down significantly.

No, seriously, they're just people who don't want their identity revealed until after the voting process is over. My guess is that they don't want to be contacted during voting... but there could be many other reasons why they choose to do that...

Thanks.
Just as long as it is related to politics ;-]
I actually agree with nearly every comment. Suspected the shortcomings of the photo prior to submission, and they have been confirmed by both the score tabulation and the comments.

In your preferences, there's an option to click that lets you do the commenting anonymously. I do it. I just feel a little more free to make comments that way, especially critiques. |
