Okay were doing height - so lets do ape index too!
Originally posted by getbeta.com: Whats your Ape Index
Your ape index is a calculation made using your height and armspan the distance from middle fingertip to middle fingertip when the arms are outstretched) and is most commonly expressed in inches. Ape index can be a negative or positive number or zero if your armspan is equal to your height.
Ape Index = Arsmpan - Height

my armspan= 5'4
my height = 5'2
so i have a +2 positive ape index.
Who else here is a monkey, and who here has mastered evolution?!?! |

Your arm-span from tip of middle finger to the other should be the same as your height....upon waking from a night's sleep. During the day our spines compress, shortening us by as much as several inches.
(I'm 5' 3.5" in the middle of the day...slightly taller in the early morning, and shorter in the evening.)
Edit: Of course, some of us do have long fingers and knuckle dragging tendencies...but not I. =)

looks like some of the ladies are falling more into the ape factor than the guys
are you women measuring across your chest? if so that might not be an accurate measurement.
try measuring across your back and see what the differance is

In principle you are correct, but anyone whose spine compresses over an inch or so during a normal waking day probably has disk pathology.
My anatomy teacher told us a great story of a young man who wanted to be a fireman, but kept failing the physical by 1/4 inch. Finally his buddies came over in the morning with a stretcher, rolled him out of bed, and drove him down to where they gave the physicals. They carried him in, asked if the people were ready to check his height, and stood him up and quickly measured him. I assume he's still a fireman.
I'm about 5'4", and my arms are about 5'7". I found out my arms were extra long not, as one might think, when I took a costuming class, and we measured everyone to make our own patterns. No, I found out when I took an archery class, and the teacher was surprised when I needed such long arrows ... |

The long arm of the SC reaches far indeed ... I can get you a more accurate figure, but I have to make a phone call to someone not home yet. |

Who do you think I am, Regis Philban?
(I get all my height-related facts from art class and The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.) |

guess you couls say I got busted :), seriously though I was just bringing up a point to make sure the measuring was being done correctly. It takes a lot of work for me to hold my ape arms out straight with out them drooping

Hah! Funny!
(The easiest way to measure "wing-span" is to have an assistant and the edge of a kitchen counter or dining table....lean into the edge of the preferred surface and stretch out arms along it....have assistant mark the start and end of your reach...get out tape measure and calculate results.) |
