Hello all! I had voulenteered for the DPC portrait mentorship, and unfortunately, I am not going to be able to participate. Don'y get me wrong. If there is a critique that you need, or another portrait photographer that you would like to talk with about ANYTHING. please feel free to email me. I will be happy to keep up with that. But unfortunately, after bombing in the portrait challenge, I feel that some one else in DPC can show you how to create such images much better than I. I will be peaceful with my speak, and happy with my decision, but I am once again done entering. The last 4 contests, in my eyes, have been a disgrace to not only great photographers, but also to paying members that have a vision all their own. There were so many shots that should have had a better score. I know that this happens alot, because of the diversity of the voters, and commenters on dpc, but, after a while it gets dis-engaging. My membership expires in 2 days, and I will call it a site. I hope that you can find a mentor that wil show you all you need to learn. Thanks for all the support and genuine compassion. There still are some great people out there. Over- and- out! 10-4! B

Fair enough -- we all need to get out of the sand-box from time to time to keep the grit from chaffing.
However, since you offered your insights into portraits should we wish them, I was wondering if you would give a fairly in depth critique of a single portrait before you go. Perhaps this one, as there is nothing in the photographers comments for us to go on -- it would be informative to hear your thoughts.

I'm sorry but I'm looking at your results from the last 4 contests and you did quite well considering the number of entries. And I don't quite understand why the complaint about it being unfair to professionals. I thought DPC was about EVERYONE learning from EVERYONE, professional or not, otherwise I should stop making comments and giving critiques because I'm far from a professional photographer that gets paid lots of money.
Could you please explain further exactly what you mean? I would like to understand it "through your eyes" because through mine you are doing great and have a lot to offer.

For what it's worth...
Yours and another were my top two picks in this challenge, placing 60th and 37th. Did not expect THAT. I also am dissapointed. :(

I don't get it...you were in the 78th percentile and got close to a 6. How is that bombing? Not ribboning doesn't mean you bombed. Your shot was quite good in my opinion. It's just that there were a number of good shots in the challenge. It's a fact: some people, often for unknown reasons, vote low on awesome images. Everyone has their own opinion and with hundreds of people voting there's going to be some disagreement. You just have to accept that a 6 is an excellent score on this site. The ribbon winners are generally just above a 7. I'm with Neuferland...could you explain this a bit more? |

I don't really know how to comment on that. I did say that my portrait bombed, and I know that isn't true. I have often said that the photo's that ribbon usually deserve to. But from my vantage point, there were, in the portrait challenge imparticuarly, too many un-original, badly li, highly processed, veil headed portraits that really didn't deserve the score that they recieved. I am not saying that they were terrible. But it was kind of disheartening after a bad day. I am confident in my portrait work. I have a strong clientelle from what I do. But I feel like I got in the mode of thinking what DPC voters want to see, and that takes away from what I want to see. If that makes any sense? I know that is my own fault, and there is no excuse for it. So I appologize for my comment, and I appologize for my dis-qualification. And for what it's worth, I honestly did meet the rules for the "branch" challenge, but really didn't make the effort to send in the original because I really didn't care. I really didn't even like that shot much and was surprised it did well? I guess ya never know what expect. I probably won't be able to stay away from DPC cause I am as addicted to the update button and the forums as the next guy. I will just have to be more selective, and quit having bad days! Hehehe! Sincerely, B
P.S. Brittanica, I will try to give a critiue on that pic. I really don't know how to critique your own work when you are fond of it.
P.S.S. I would still be willing to start a group of fine individuals that would like to critique each others portrait work, and have weekly assignments, if anyone is still interested? |

I don't know... You could teach me quite a bit. Your work is nice and I didn't know the difference between candid and portrait until I entered the contest. I'm sorry if my "Portrait" offended you. That wasn't my intention.I don't always agree with the top three finishers. But I don't always agree that popular television shows are entertaining.. This is what makes each of us unique and each of our votes important. This site will lose a valuble resource if your decision is final. Good luck.

I thought your entry was pretty good and 5.9 is NOT a bad score.

Thanks, and I mis-interpreted the decision. No excuse, but I had a sressed out week to begin with. Studio work, althogh I have the equipment to do it, is kind of out of my comfort zone. I should have stuck to my outdoor, natural lit work. Great portfolio of portraits you have elapso. Very nice.

at that price including a UV filter and a lens hood. I feel like your buddy got hosed or I should be signing on the dotted line.......Or maybe I should come up there and give you a hug. jk ;-) I will let you know when I get it.
And not to hijack a thread and put it back on track. Parrothead I hope you do decide o stick around at least for the forums and to provide those that need help with it. If you do something like the mentorship group thing by having weekly assignments and critiquing each other then I am all go for it.

but your score is still better than anything i've ever been able to get. you can still teach us a lot. you're definitely qualified to mentor me at least. :(
it doesn't matter what score you get, i rather get mentored from you than someone who shoots those veil shots that seem to score well.

That really is the point of a self-critique isn't it -- to get past the love of a creation you've poured yourself into and see it as something other than a part of you (or in this case, perhaps, as a part of your model).
I am interested in your assessment of your image though -- mainly because I don't care for the distorted affect. Beautiful and well lit model, interesting expression, well choosen props -- it has all the makings of a lovely portrait. It's just that I would never have considered getting close enough for the lens to distort the perspective as it did. But, because I wouldn't do it myself I am more interested in why others would -- if that kind of backward logic makes sense to anyone but me.
Glad you decided to stay.

Glad to see you changed your mind and glad to see I'm not the only one who posts when having a bad day and then say, "WHAT WAS I THINKING?"

I would be interested as well in a workshop for portraits |
