Here's a USED Mac G4 that I'm thinking of buying this morning.

I need some quick advice before I potentially do the wrong thing. I don't really need it but I thought I'd look into switching to a Mac(I hate MS big time) and a carry around wouldn't be a bad thing.

1.Is this a bad idea?
2.What should I look out for?
3.The software package is huge and is worth the price alone if the computer works...any questions re: the software that I should ask?
4.The printer has mixed reviews but is a throw in and the CD burner as well...but I don't want to commit to a money pit that sucks me in...any thoughts?

Any answers to any of these questions would help me out tremendously. Thanks in advance.

Steve

If you buy, do make positively sure that the licenses for all that software are transferred, i.e., (s)he's not still using the software and just selling the machine with the software still installed.

Its a powerbook with a fair size CPU and a decent amount of RAM, the HDD can be changed and that machine can run OSX Tiger, there seems to be a lot of software with it, I hope the originals discs are included. I switched from PC to MAC and never regreted it, I would say go for it.

I have a G4 iBook and it comes with me everywhere, my girlfriend runs a G3 Powerbook with tiger OSX Kiss viruses goodbye and also I believe the monitor colour on a MAC looks so much better than my old PC lappy.

I have the G5 iMAC desktop too that I use for photo editing, the PC is now just a big game consul for championship manager.

Kirbic- I think the powerbook itself is worth the price, if it works...that is. The software is a bonus, that I do of course need but even without the licensing transfer, would you buy the computer? And what are the possible implications without licensing transfer ( I know I can't get help, upgrade or recover the program if lost...but I've never had that problem before). I also figure they are well advanced programs and would probably throw out the computer before any of that's a problem.

BTW All four of my Mac-Snob buddies keep getting Mac-Duds. It's totally unbelievable but I still think there must be something to the Mac OS thang that beats PC

I have a Powerbook G4 and love it. I spent most of my working years as a computer tech and programmer, and have never been so happy with a single machine. I can't think of any negatives on this deal (other than the risk of buying used from someone you don't know).

As for games, I only play World of Warcraft, and all the Blizzard stuff is written on hybrid CD's for Mac and PC.

I did see that it has had the mobo replaced. Here's hoping that cured whatever problems it evidently had!

The latest MacOS is a very nice operating system, and the fact that it's based on a UNIX core says a lot of positive things. OTOH, MS seems to be content to just keep slapping patches on XP until late next year, so MacOS is just gonna keep looking better and better in the short term. The next version of Windows (now called Vista, formerly Longhorn) had better be a great improvmement. I know they have already dropped the expected new file system from the initial release :-(

A 500Mhz G4 is about the minimum you'd want to work with for any serious purposes. The RAM is sufficient. The HD is very small, but if this is a second computer for the road or trips to Starbucks, it ought to be fine. Having licenses to all the software would be a HUGE bonus.

Yes, I noticed that the "mobo" was replaced and I hope that means that it's been tuned up.

I took a bunch of pix the other night and it would have been nice to see then and there that they stunk...not all bad but I hate taking 100+ pix only to have 5-10 that are useable. And the Starbucks thing is another reason...there's one on my corner and it's nice to do stuff away from my palace, on occasion.
