I have this intense fear that photo's this week will receive very little in the way of helpful comments. So what I'm going to do is vote as normal, leaving comments as I normally would on those that I want to, and then once I'm done I'm going to randomly choose a number from 1-10 (a 10-sided die would work I think) and then leave comments on all the photo's that I gave that score to. I just thought I would share this with you guys, hopefully you'll join me in leaving comments! If you're really feeling generous, you could do more than one number too!

Yeah, with this many submissions I wouldn't be surprised if comments fall by the wayside. Another way of dealing with it would be at some point during your voting, say after you've voted on the first 80, force yourself to comment on every one of the next 20, and then go back to commenting as usual. I tend to do that, sometimes only commenting when I have something in particular to say, and sometimes intentionally commenting on every image I vote on. I've said it before that votes are valueable, but comments (real comments that actually offer more than "neat" or "it sucks") are worth much much more.

we are just over an hour and a half into the voting, and I've made it to 12 photos. LOL. I don't leave less than a 5 line comment, so I'm slooooow, but I'll be voting endless hours this week. hopefully I'll get a good chunk (aiming for 200+) commented on, but well see. I'll vote all for sure. I think your idea is cute. Will definately work to get more photos commented on.
Thanks for your idea, and your thought to the photographer. It is a kind gesture. :)

-beamish- I'm glad you liked it. Although I must admit to having a sort of vested interest in lots of comments, since I do have an entry this round (which, in an unrelated tangent is doing horribly and I'm crushed, I thought it was a great photo). But yes, comments are good. I have fun leaving them even.

i decided to approach voting this week the other way round ... there's no way i will manage to vote on all photos. so, i'll do as many as i can with comments. only if i haven't hit the minimum 25% by this weekend will i start voting w/out leaving a comment to make sure that my votes at least count.

My experience has been that once I hit about 50 votes, my score doesn't change must at all. I've heard other people say the same. Based on that I think if we vote on 25% and then spend the rest of the time commenting it would serve the photographers better and the end results would still be the same.

What do you think?

I try to comment if I vote. This is the only way they will know why I gave the score I did. Sometimes I don't comment on the lower scores that have obvious flaws and don't appeal to me any way. Won't say "I just don't like it" or "lousy job". On the other hand I don't just like to say "wow, good job. I like it." That doesn't help them any. Admit it, it really is easier to comment on the bad ones, though. If I don't really like it but don't have anything really bad about it I might just vote a 4 or 5 and not comment. I figure a 5 doesn't hurt their score, as some of the winners only average 5 point something. I might even be helping them with a 5 vote. I like to read everyone's comments so I can learn.

Wow, i just checked the number of comments I left this week: 201. It must be a record for me. I try to give comments whenever I have the time. Sometimes I'll just give my reactions to the photo. Somtimes I'll try to point out some things that I liked or could have been improved. I find that leaving comments makes me stop and really look at the photo. In general, I think I give higher scores when I write a comments.

Maybe you should take the time to read the titles :-) You left a comment on my image and scored it three because "you didn't know what it was" even though the single word title said it all. You also asked that I let yoyu know what it is so you could re-think your score as it was "the only way to be fair". Well, I mailed you, didn't get a reply and your comment hasn't changed. Don't get me wromg here, my image currently has my highest ever score and I am really not put out by a declaration of a low score and respect your honesty. However, you left a comparitively wordy comment which has been wasted - Evebn if the score is a one, it would mean more than a ten if there is a reasonable explaination as to why or what could be done better.

I've gotten a fair deal of comments this round (YAY!) and alot of them have been encouraging and telling me what I did wrong, and what I did right. The most recent comment however says "just dreadful." That's all. Verbatim. Um, great, I'm glad you think it's dreadful, now can you tell me what I did wrong so that I actually have some hope of improving?

I'll post a new thread when this round is over and see what people think of the original and so forth.

This is challenge is also the most comments I've ever left. It hovers at exactly half, give or take about one. I don't know how I managed that, since I'm not doing it on purpose. After I get back from work tonight I'll try to comment on the ones I voted on, but haven't commented yet.

I got one of these types of comments last week, and one this week saying, "To bad about the title", what does that mean? I thought we were being judged on the picture not the title, and by the way to whomever left that comment... if you think about the picture and what you see, the title if perfect!

I think we have trolls that come on Sunday afternoon and low ball pictures to help their own or a friend of thiers. I'm not to worried about it, I know this weeks picture of mine was a good one, and I'm proud of it and how it has scored.

I know I score when I give comments. You're right it makes you really stok and LOOK at the photo. You find more good about it as you look at it. Course that's what I'm looking for when I look at them. I want to see what's good that I can learn to do myself. And you know what they say; "You will always find what you are looking for". I voted on all 303 shots and commented on 227 of them. It took me til Saturday afternoon but I'm glad I took the time. I gavem more higher scores this time than I ever have before. I prefer to comment. It makes me do a better job of scoring.

I want to take this opportunity to those participants who took time to comment on my submission. It takes time to look though this number of submissions and to leave comments. Labor of love I guess. That said--Thank you!

I don't know whether I commented on yours this week but I really made an effort to leave comments... a total of 161 this week. I signed them all as well with DPz. I know how much they help me, especially when I first joined the site so I feel that I should do the same whenever possible.

I've gone back through all my 3's in the last challenge and this challenge and I cannot find this remark. I've also looked at those I've added points to in the last 2 days and can't find it there either. As for your mailing me I keep all my dpc mail and there is none from you in there. I looked at the feather and I still cannot see that it is a feather, knowing it is and reading the comment on it. I just can't see it. I'm sorry abut that. I don't know what happened to your mail but I didn't get it. I'll even send you my cover page listing all my dpc e-mail is you'd like. Get to me now and I'll talk with you privately via e-mail or aim - PTLBecky. I'm really sorry about this mixup and it seems to have upset you. I'm sorry about that too. I never mean to upset anyone. Get to me now and let us straighten this up.

I do read the titles. Sometimes it takes the title to clarify or explain something that I don't recognize right of the bat. Or it tells me what they were shooting for when they took the picture, if I can't see how it goes with the challenge. And I do score them on meeting the challenge. If not what is the sense of even giving a challenge, just say "send us your best one this week". Meeting the challenge may or may not be that important of a deal. It all depends on that particular picture and all the others - have they all met it.

The comments I like to read are when the challenge is over. I read over the comments to find ways of given better comments, things and ways I've never thought of before. Ways that will help the photographer improve his shot.

It's a good sharp picture with some strange shadows. If I knew what it was I could score it. Right now I can't see that it fits the challenge nor is a cool picture. So it is a 3. Let me know what it is and I'll rethink my score. This is the only way I know to be fair to you. PTL

Thanks for showing it to me. I am sorry but I still can not see that it is a feather. I see not space between the limbs (?) of the feather. It looks solid to me. Like I said before I didn't get an e-mail from you, there are none in my files and I keep all from dpc just to make sure I respond. In fact I don't file it until I have responded. This time had you gotten to me I still could not have recognized it, because I still don't. I really do wish I could see it, not only for you but for me also. I feel really stupid that I can't even recognize a feather when I see it. As for the lengthy comments would you rather see: Color-4, crop - 5, composition - 7, subject - 8 total average 6; and never know how I really feel about your photo?
