On your image IMO it is technically good, but in a challenge of over 400+ entries you need something that has punch and stands out above the rest. Yours doesn't have it.

Well tell me how it would have punch instead of bitching at me about things i didnt say. I think it did stand out. Sure wasn't another like it.

And i was not calling out commenters, mearly replying to thier questions. Were not allowed to PM were not allowed to reply to comments - what the heck ARE we allowed to do???

Ok misundetstood but giving them a finger is not nice either. Either way I thought it was RUDE. YOU can privately PM them after voting has ended...........

i don't think her photo comments are "calling anyone out." she's responding to specific comments made during voting. i, for one, MUCH prefer this method than getting a PM during the challenge.

Nope. I couldn't care less actually. Read my profile. This post was made tongue in cheek but people are such wrecks around here lately that it doesn't matter.

I do however think that people need to be telling others why they leave a low score. "I don't like it" is not helpful.
"I don't like it because..." Is.

having to be called a wreck is exactly why people don't leave comments

I think you ought to be thrilled you have 5 favorites and move on... : )

I like the first one below and the second one (adv edit and facing camera). Maybe the second a little better than the first.

with so many photos to vote on how do you expect people to leave a comment on everyone? I think the image is original and the concept is very creative, but the technical execution is lacking.

Okay - tell me WHERE it is lacking - this is what i want to hear.
This is my point. The only neg feedback is "i don't like it" thats useless to me. Tell me the techincal problems and i'd be happy.

people use a middle finger smiley all the time. I didn't think the joke was any different.

Please tell me what would have made the image stand out.

I think it's soft and flat. Happy? :D

Steve
I thought my hair was pinned back in that photo (might be wrong) and that it was completely in shadow, so i didn't understand.
Now i am confused again - what is scoch?

Not quite - how would i make it *not* soft and flat?

I thought a scoch was what was in mens jeans. Or not in men's jeans. I think it means breathing room. Or something like that. And spelled scosh.

I didnt' like it because it was much too dark and a lot of the detail was lost. i understood the artistic approach you were trying to capture (trying to be mysterious, etc), but I think you lost a lot of emotion from the lack of detail. I did vote on this, and I did give it an 8, but I thought it had technical problems, not artistic. My opinion of the branch challenge was that the majority of the shots were on the weaker side (especially compared to the colour portrait challenge this week). Had the other entries been stronger, I probably would have changed this to a 5.

From a different vein, I think posting threads complaining about your score should always force the user to hit "submit" ten times to ensure they want to do it. Hopefully then, people wouldn't complain about their scores so much. Who cares what you score, so long as you enjoy your own shots. Otherwise, its time to quit photography if all you're doing is trying to appease the crowds.
I think in this case, mes is honstly trying to capture input as to HOW to improve her shot, but I have to admit I wasn't really impressed with the title of the thread "if DPC hates..." which is sorely implying an injustice to her shot instead of an honest-to-goodness request to help her take better pictures.

And we all know DeviantART is the epoch of good photography. I don't know about everyone else, but I joined this website to be nothing but praised and adulated. This is the only way I feel encouraged to share my snapshots. If people can't appreciate my photography, I'll just have to sit them in a line and bitchslap them until they come to their senses. Anyone who rates my any of my challenge submissions below an 10 needs to have their head examined by a certified shrink. Adore me and my photography. Otherwise I will hate you all forever and ever for disliking my avant garde aesthetic and critical tastes. I <3 3v3ry1 okthxbye.

stop ironing them, and use a hotter wash cycle.

On a more serious note, the photograph while it does have pretty darn good artistic merit, I believe is suffering from being too dark. (I didn't vote in the branch competition) and could've benefited from the accent lighting being in a totally different location than where it was in your submission (near the hands). Maybe all that was needed was reversing the setup and have the entire scene lit from the other direction, slightly outlining the face. In this, I think some of the outtakes were more successful.

I left a comment on your Photo explaining exactly why I would have given it a 4 or 5 had I the chance to vote in the challenge.

Hope my comments help

You seem to be misunderstanding how a critique works or what it's for. It's for you to learn what's wrong with it, then for YOU to go research and learn how to fix it. It's not the commenters job to teach you...

This question has already been answered by davmct and rather extensively by Neuferland on your original submission. I agree with them. I think your submission done well for the image you submitted. I am not fueling the fire anymore.

Scosh is a term meaning "a small amount", as: "Could use a scosh less contrast."
I first heard the word used aboard ship while in the Navy (early 60s), referring to adjustments at the RCP (reactor control panel) console.

I agree - in basic i was unable to make it moody-dark without losing the highlights. Thankyou for USEFUL feedback.

This thread wasn't *meant* to be about my score - i wanted feedback on my other images from the set AND feedback on what problems there were with my image since i did get a good handful of 1-3 with nothing more that "i don't like it" to go on. It kinda went that way though. I should have just used that middle finger smiley ;)
Frankly i get shot down every time i dont shot DPC style and do well when i do. I stupidly was referancing something i had said about my shoes entry and through no fault of thier own people didn't know that and shew i don't know, i guess some people don't like fridays...;)
