I suggested in another thread that there be some recognisable symbol displayed below the username to indicate if English was this person's first language.
This would help when reading posts and comments as there are occasions when remarks are considered insulting or misleading in some way due to ill chosen words rather than being intentionally. This could be a preference option rather than compulsory or people could opt in or out .if they did not wish this information to be known public.
Thoughts?

Great idea.
My 1st language is Dutch, and sometimes I realy can't find a way to describe what I want to say.
I am sure others with me have that same feeling. It's a big world out there... |

Can one of the options be "English is my first language but I still have a very low rate of comprehension and/or an inability to communicate/write properly?" ;)
I do commend all of our English as a second/third/fourth/fifth language people here. Many do tremendously well and, knowing that I would never be able to write well enough to get by in another language, they have my admiration. |

haha...The context for my comment is provided in the thread that you referred where the word 'idiotic' was meant to be used lightly without realizing the harshness with which that words is received in North America.
Oh, and my 1st language is German...

I guess here we have the first sample of:

Edit: Too late by a few seconds.

Still, mistakes happen.
Once I wanted to thank someone by saying something like 'I had a most pleasant weekend, not least because of your company'.
Typed it in, mailed it awaw, then discovered that I had actually typed 'not the least because ...'
Embarrassing.

no worse than the boy/girl button.... The British National flag would be most appropriate for English.

Thanks for the explanation - my point exactly - I thought you were just being bloody rude because you didn't put a smiley!
As German is your first lamguage you wouldn't understand that!!!!! :))))
Seriously, it could help if someone was worried about expressing themselves in English but wanted to take part in forums.

I think a little flag icon for nationality (not language) would be really cool. |

Yeah, in typeworld, as well as the real world, I avoid any smileys or winks when employing sarcasm. It makes it that much more difficult to detect. Sure, you're more likely to piss people off (especially in typeworld) but for those that dig it it's that much more satisfying. |

I get your point but I tend to read "body language" and take the words within a context so it was difficult here! I'll remember your technique in future and then flame you!

I like the flag idea. I like knowing where people are from. Why would you need more than one--do you have dual citizenship? |

great idea!
Sometimes I'm tempted to put on mi sig something like
"I don't intend to be rude, It's just my minimal English skills"
and maybe add... "try to write yourself in Spanish, stupid" ;) |

Although knowing where people are (not their nationalities necessarily) would save a great deal of checking on profiles and the flags would look pretty, it wouldn't get round the problem of knowing if English was their first language in today's world where many people live in foreign countries.
And in Canada for example, some people have French as their first language and others have English.
This is why I think a symbol would be of more use.

I do have do dual citizenship in Germany and America. I was raised speaking both English and German. So I'm fluent in both, but I'm proud of both my countries. I think the flag idea is awesome!

I would say you should have a flag for every country where you have citizenship. It would also be interesting to know country of residence. Language buttons would be good too (in order of preference?) |
