Any pointers on a good Intro Strobe and Softbox?

I know I want one but don't know which direction to go. Probably doing a lot of Product shots maybe Portraits for fun.

Thinking 1 Strobe with softbox(maybe with barndoors and gels attachment) and light panel (reflector) to start. Let's say I'm shooting hotel lobby/rooms are umbrellas better?

There are so many out there, what is a good power to start with, if a strobe is listed as 150 w/s what is the w/s...

Ok enough questions to start...
