There are two files to download and install from this site.

The first is the GTK+ run-time. If you only want the GIMP to work, then don't worry about why you need this.

Next, download the GIMP application (the second link under the Main category).

These are both .zip files so you'll have to unpack them, then run the installers for each (GTK+ first). The instructions are fairly straightforward although some might be confused when the GIMP asks you to "get the monitor resolution". You can probably safely select the first option (get it from the windowing system) or just keep the defaults.

After loading an image, like a .jpg, for instance, you can right-click on the image to get a menu of options. Things like unsharp mask are found under the Filters menu item.

Umm, that's it. It's free. It will crash. But then again, your OS is probably most of the problem.

Another thing to do at installation is adjust the Tile cache to 2/3 of system RAM. This should give you better performance than the default setting. It's all in the help file.

Next step: download Grokking the Gimp and the Gimp Manual for a few tips and tricks (links at www.gimp.org).

I've had occasional crashes running 1.2.4-pre on XP, but that's prerelease software for you. The adventurous could try using it on Linux where it is more stable. Xandros Linux (www.xandros.com) is an easy version to install and it has the Gimp bundled (in Debianised version).
