Somehow I'm getting the feeling that someone made an established member on the site upset maybe, and the rest of the clique hopped on the bandwagon and have been bullying them since.

Thank you Pauline for the reply, that's all I wanted to know in the first place. If you were in my place, having not seen the inflammatory post by this Chit/eyeronic person which sparked off the whole thing by accusing people of cheating, then you would have been just as wary by the number of unpleasant remarks and jabs at someone, seemingly behind their back. Just look at deapee's replies in the second link* you posted. So, no hard feelings?
As it happens I think there's a lot of helpful folks on the site with good advice for those here to learn, and I'm looking forward to some of their insight and maybe some of their talent may brush off!
*incidentally where do I apply for those two hours back? Is there a form or something? :)
