How do I make a transparent gif of text and have it not look awful? I need to make a title image that will overlay a multicolored/patterned background. I'm using Photoshop Elements at work and have tried a number of different methods and they all come out jagged and not entirely transparent around the text. What the heck?

GIF transparencies are horrible as each pixel is either visible or not, there is no variation in the degree of transparency. Your best bet is a PNG file, it handles alpha transparency.
If it has to be a GIF, then you need to make sure that your image has perfectly straight edges on it and is not anti-aliasing itself (photoshop loves to soften edges). This is tough. |

| Does IE handle PNG files well? For some reason, I was under the impression that it did not. |

You are quite right, I apologize, IE does not support PNG (and thus it really isn't a good choice).
Text gifs are always hard and the only solution I have found is to allow a border around them. If you know your background is going to be green/brown (like in your example) then find a good balanced color matching the background and let it be a 1pixel border be around the letters.
Hopefully others will have a suggestion. |
