Anyone notice that on the front page, all of this week's winners, including Home Sweet Home, are duotones?
I think after the Colours BONANZA, everybody is going B&W.

*ahem* one would hope all the duotone winners were duotone! ;)
very true though, I had not tried duotone prior to this challenge and it has opened my eyes considerably.... it can certainly 'pick up' an otherwise average image. |

I think EVERYONE was so happy being allowed to use b/w and duo that we just HAVE to. ;) (I submit a desat for home sweet home and a duotone for sound).

See, a lot of people think black and white (or other duotone) can make a bland image more interesting, whereas I think it can make an interesting image more bland. A LOT of entries that have been entered as B&W make me want to see them in colour instead, though in some cases I agree it's a good choice for the photo.
I'm not a huge fan of B&W-for-the-sake-of-it; I tend to like it only when there's a noticeably high byplay of light and shadow or a fairly simple scene. B&W landscape photos, for instance, do very little for me but make me wish they were in colour, with rare exceptions.
This is just personal taste, though. I don't object to the notion of people entering duotones, they just won't grab me as well on average. |

Very interesting observation! Not only are the top 3 all duotone, 7 of the top 10 are as well...
I think Mavrik had it right-- so few opportunities to use B/W or sepia recently, that it was nice to use it again.
Personally, there are often full-color images in the challenges that I would like to see in B/W. IMHO, B/W emphasizes the textures and lighting much more since your brain has to evaluate the shot without the benefit of color.
