We need to be able to describe our images because we do not know every superstition and urban legend from around the world. On my image of the Zodiac Killer here is some of the story. He terrorized the Bay Area in the early 60âs and late 70âs. The image that I submitted was one of his murder sites where he stabbed a teenage girl 10 times. Here is a better image of the murder site it is near the one lone oak tree.
He is an Urban Legend around Northern California and the world because no one has found out who he was. People even wonder if he is still alive?

Bob.
You may wish to edit your post to remove the refences to your submission this week. While it is not officially "against the rules" (and thus I am not removing your post), many users do not wish to know which photos are whose, and might mark you down for revealing you photo (that practice is not encouraged but some people do it).
Also please bear in mind the challenge description:
'Photograph a well-known superstition or urban legend. Keep in mind your target audience as you photograph, since this site spans the globe. The shot must be taken this week (10/28-11/03).' (emphasis added).
Considering that you chose an UL with limited, regional interest, some might argue that you didn't meet the challenge. I'll refrain from posting my opinion on that as I don't like to post about specific photos in the forums while voting is in progress.
Good luck with the challenge.

Well, rather than helping your score, you probably just doomed it. The majority of the people dislike discussing the photos in the current voting, and will probably score it lower for doing so. Not me personally, although I don't like it much, but a great percent of people will do so. Best not to say anything at all. ~Heather~

I for one am a strong believer that titles shouldn't save an entry so if I have to read the title to know what yours is about then I will probably mark it down.
Judging by some of the comments I have received about 50% didn't get mine so maybe I should have broken my own rule and given a more descriptive name, oh well, we'll see. |

I am not in it for the score. I am in it for participation and rule changes. I have participated in every contest except for a week or two when my mother died. |

I don't care if a title saves a photo or not and descriptions would be fine by me.
If we, as voters, demand that titles are generic or nonexistent then what about all the works of art throughout the centuries that benefitted from a title or description.
For my money.....what seems to occur a lot lately is that the most generic, stock photo has the best chance of scoring well. You could take the photos from my stock advertising sites and enter them here and have a better chance of doing well than a more thought provoking photo that might need a bit of a jump start to get folks to look at the photo a bit longer than an advertisement time frame.
For the record, I'm not saying one style of photo (stock, thought provoking, obscure, etc) is better of worse than another. I will say that encouraging a very narrow style of photography through rules or etiquette may not be a good thing.

it's pretty hard to take a quality stock photo.
demands a level of technical skill and planning that i just don't see in the majority of shots on this site.
no offense to anyone, but frankly, if you're good enough to sell to stock agencies, then you're a pretty darn good photographer.

If you're in it simply for the participation, then just have fun with it. Seeing a discription has been talked to death, and from what I have heard, it simply isn't going to happen. You have 2 purposes here? To enter photos and to change the rules? I guess I don't get that. If you don't care about the points, why are you complaining that people don't get your photo? You participated, so by what you are saying, you should be happy. I guess I don't understand your point. ~Heather~

Actually, its not that hard to sell stock photos..as long a you are generic enough. I have sold a little over a dozen photos as stock to Media General...3 of them were entered here (Aloha, Edison and Party Favors).
I would not consider them my most interesting work..to me :-)

I am not complaining about people not getting just my image but other peopleâs images also. We are worldwide on this sight and I didnât get a lot of the other peopleâs images concept either. So I suggest to them, post it, so we can understand your image. If you are going to judge an image solely on concept and title, then you need a reference to decipher it? Photography is not just still life, what so many of you on this site seem to think it should be. Itâs easy to put a cat and a dog into an image and call it âcat dogâ for you can see that unless your are blind. |
